I've had it before with PHers who think that as I worked for a local authority, and I have my shall we say strong opinions about a certain portion of society (fking idiot commuter cyclists), that I deserve to be sacked. I had an email sent to me (via PH) telling the name of my boss (they were wrong) and the office I worked in (again, whilst I knew the people they were talking about, they again were wrong). It stank of "I pay your wages" and made me furious, and then sympathetic that they were that sad they felt they had to email me directly to try and intimidate me.
Shameful behaviour. You should post up the emails. We could do some real sleuthing. hehe

You should be safe here. I doubt our council dwellers have an active militant political wing.

Unlike our spandex clad, two-wheeled warrior "friends". As we see on every thread where a cyclist was in the wrong. rolleyes

I've since changed bosses, jobs and continents. But thanks for the offer - next time I upset someone I'll take you up on it! wink

I can confirm the flip flop wearing rugger bugger look is not council. It does look exceedingly stupid, but it's not council.

Talking of rugby.

Is Rugby Leauge - the one played by people who live along the M62 - council?

I know and care nothing for sport but I have been taken by friends to various sporting events. Rugby Union seems quite middle class. I went to a Rugby League match in some place off the M62 and it appeared the spectators were less posh.

I got given a rugby shirt once and wore it to my local pub where I got some funny looks. The shirt looked OK with some sort of flags based emblem on it. The fellow regulars who were into Rugby - I guess Union ? - told me wearing this top was a bit of a 'no no.'

I think football is terribly council - especially if wearing a football strip if not actually playing.

Wresting is council. Boxing? Not so sure.

Indeed all that cage fighting total fighting st is so council even council people think it is so.

Snooker? Like boxing, I'm not sure.

Darts will for ever be the preserve of fat men in beer logo'd Tee Shirts whiling away a night in a flat roof pub.

I actually am a Director and have worked in social housing for some 25 years.

can't be bothered to include the powerfully built bit wink and set myself up for ridicule !!!

Oh the stories I could tell.

I am somewhat removed from the tnts these days.

I don't think the country or society realise just how many millions of people are sat, doing nothing, being propped up on benefits- be it in the social or private rented sector.

nearly 80% of our tenants (and we own 10,000's of homes) are in full receipt of housing benefits- this shows you just how few people work for a living.

I have no answers- but society isn't too different from the famous "Hogarth's gin lane" picture from the C19th.

just the people drink white lightening now and sit on front of 50" plasma's.

and of course have "uman rites" innit bruv.

I have no glee about society or my tales- just sheer astonishment still as to how people live, breed and drag their poor children up.

have you ever had to be involved in having children taken from their parents because they are so unfit, abusive etc ?

had to house sex offenders, because they have rights ?

seen 100's if not 1000's of Pakistani women raped, abused and beaten due to the fantastic arranged marriage system: which seems to exist as a pretext to get the husbands into the country ?

seen countless horrifically disabled and cognitively impaired Pakistani women presumably raped by random arranged marriage strangers, just to get them pregnant, to give husbands rights to be here

walked into homes and seen the kids starving, beaten etc, because the parents are drunks/druggies etc

the horrendous benefits britain/street type programmes really do portray well, how millions do live.

I like to think in life I've made a difference to protect and help the vulnerable in society. I sincerely mean that: I really have bettered the lives of 1000's in varying ways.

If I fancy sharing an entetaining tale, to lighten the horror of it, so be it.

get over yourself.

Errr...how do you follow that one?

I was going to say - I delivered a Chinese takeaway last night at 10.30pm to a council house and the door was answered by a 4-year old lad (still dressed in day clothes) and he was eating a pot of some chocolate dessert. So that bodes well for him sleeping through the night.

They really are totally clueless. Officialdom can huff and puff all they want, but these people don't watch documentaries about healthy living or good parenting, not do they read such articles in the papers (if they can indeed read). Any campaigns along those lines are just a waste of time.

RL is generally played in northern "working class" towns, a high proportion of which are former pit towns which are now, more often than not, very council. It's probably slightly more tribal than Union but nowhere near on a par with football in that respect - with the exception of the codheads coming to town I never see a police presence at matches

I play both and enjoy both, and the RL community is, in the main, a very friendly place to be involved. As an example, after the awful death of Danny Jones the other week - a player at a lower division club who would have worked full time as well as playing the sport. He died of a heart attack at 29 from an undiagnosed heart condition leaving a wife and 5 month old twins. Keighley's next home game had 4 times their normal attendance and supporters from all clubs went in their colours to show their support and help raise money. The fund set up after his death to support his family currently stands at £165k donated by supporters and clubs alike. At the same time Rio Ferdinand lost his wife and received abuse from Twitter trolls rolleyes

As for the M62 bit - Coventry, Oxford, London, Southampton, Hemel, Gloucester..............

It's probably growing more, as a game, than most other sports wink

Sorry to rant but the attitude of some (including the establishment and the media) towards the game I love is something that I find incredibly frustrating.

I would agree that Castleford and Featherstone are a bit council though wink

As a Rugby Union player I can confirm the following:

1) The aforementioned shorts in all weathers is not Council. We're rugby players, and we don't care.

2) Rugby League is Council. Rugby Union is not.

3) Football is now also, officially, Council. See St. Georges flags, tramp stamps, football shirts.

I find it amusing that quite a lot of posters are using the idea of something being "a bit council" in lieu of "I don't like..." Kinda similar in the way that the word "chav" is often misused on here too.

So council that RU goes out of its way to purloin all of our best players and coaches wink

I really don't get the animosity between the two tbh. They are totally different games now and there seems to be this ridiculous malcontent - both from the "establishment" and the "rebellious northern union". It happened 120 years ago FFS

I notice that the RFU are promoting more people getting involved in rugby by playing touch - no scrums, no lineouts, six tackles and a roll ball when tagged (sound familiar?)

My granddad, uncle and cousin all played professional RL. Whilst it is based in mainly northern areas of England, it is a working man's sport

I have a season ticket as do my OH and the kids. We stand with a group of people every week - you know what, every single one of us works and pays our way, doesn't sound very council to me

So I'm council. Yet I can spell, use grammar, and have never claimed a days benefits in my life wink

I'm a landlord and can sadly confirm what you say is true.

An ex-tenant of mine "moved out" after being sent down for 4 years. When I went to empty his flat out, there was paperwork all over the place. One of the letters was basically telling him that he wasn't allowed contact with his kids from a previous relationship and another from Social Services telling him and his new pregnant partner that when the baby was born they were taking that one as they had now taken her first 3. They had tried their hardest with Social Services though & had even written up their weekly budget. Top of the list was weed, then booze, then Brighthouse. Food was next then electric (no gas or water budgeted for). Before the kids were taken off them, they were regularly having parties every night & putting her 3 kids in the spare room.

This is just one example - I've got loads of others unfortunately.

I think a lot of it depends on the locality of the team playing. Rugby Union in West London / Twickenham / Home counties is considerably not council at all. In fact quite the opposite and a little elitist in a 'public school' kind of way.

You play the exact same game, by the same rules in a Welsh valley / mining town and you are at the opposite end of the scale.

I didn't realise the rugby community would be so defensive - or quick to react. Shows there's a lot of passion there.

Remember this thread is (with a few welcome serious but welcome exceptions like the housing stiff above) supposed to be light hearted.

We are taking the puss out of others, and ourselves here.

An amusing diversion, nothing more.

Me too; you carry on, Austinsmirk. I used to come across these people myself in a previous job for the DWP. It gets me when the bleeding hearts and the leftie types get all ranty about cutting benefits and capping them etc - they haven't got a a clue what these sink estates etc are like and what the people that live on them are like.
