On the return flight, since making my booking, they've changed the flight from London to Dublin twice. At present there isn't a change in airport (as there was originally) so no opportunity to take bags early. Not that it makes much difference to me...but might for some smile

OK my view.

We are doing Locator flight to Dublin. Dublin to London, London to Las Vegas. Few days later LV to Miami. Few days later back to London then the next day back to Dublin... This has saved £700 flying economy (after the locator flight) - worthwhile.

Now this makes me nervous - on the ticket booking...

Very important information
If you do not check your bags through to your final destination you may incure additional charges

Anyone ever incurred additional charges?

PS - When I tried to book the airline came up with a completely different route at the same price that I could not replicate via Google Flights. As it involved better changes, and better inflight experience I was happy to go with it!
It is VERY important to make sure that on your return leg of London-Dublin you make it an airport change. For example from Miami you flight will be arriving into heathrow. So make your london to dublin flight leave from either Gatwick or London City. That way they HAVE to let you pick up your bags at heathrow when you land, then you just 'accidentally' get stuck in traffic on the way to the other airport. If you've booked a through flight MIA-LHR-DUB the agent will check your bags right the way through and in a lot of places will totally refuse to let you 'short check' your bag without sending you to the ticket counter for a repricing. You may find a nice agent who will let you short check, but I'd prefer not to take the chance to be honest....

I have planned an overnight 18 hour stop in London to ensure that I get bags back. Will this work?

yeah, that should be fine, I was worried you only had a couple of hours!

Close escape, although I had worked out as a reserve that it was cheaper to get a flight from Dublin to the airport just down the road (flights start while we are away) than the train home.....

The BA Club sale from Dublin is back on - I've just booked club world flights to Miami on Christmas Eve and back on the 5th January for £950. Whilst we have the hassle of getting to Dublin at the start of the trip (a £25 Ryanair flight) it's good value compared to the sale price of a LHR - MIA flight at £2250 (same flight)!

The itinerary is DUB-LHR-MIA (the LHR-MIA is on a A380, upper deck, which will be my first flight on the a380 so looking forward to it. The only way to do it on the way back on the date we want (and avoiding American Airlines in their older cabin config.) is via JFK then on to the JFK-LCY A318 service which by all accounts is great.

We don't have children so Christmas is always a bit difficult as our own families are "challenging" (especially at Christmas), so I am really looking forward to a spending it somewhere else, and am strangely excited about travelling on Christmas Eve!

Did you find those prices through the ba website or elsewhere? We are looking to go America for Christmas and new year and those prices sound great!

I use this website to find the lowest prices - http://matrix.itasoftware.com then use the BA website to book. The key to getting the Ex-EU sale is that you have to start in Dublin. PM if you get stuck!

Anyone able to comment on this? We are flying back from US into Gatwick and then missing the Gatwick Dublin leg this summer so a little concerned.

It was discussed at length on the BA board on flyertalk I can't recall the intricacies, but I think the consensus view was that it was about bag charges and nothing else - ie if you through check your bags in the US you get your long haul luggage allowance for the short haul leg. If you retrieve your bags at LGW and then recheck them at LGW to go to Dublin you'd get the short haul baggage allowance and could be over it if you have maxed out under the long haul allowance.

I think.

Greg - thanks - so with a little luck do you think we should be OK: we wont be looking to use the short haul baggage allowance anyway on the final Dubbers link as we will be jumping off at LGW and stopping there?

Yes, you should be. The key point in you journey will be at check in the US. The check in agent may say you have to through check you bags. Be proactive, so as soon as you hand over your passports get in first and say politely but firmly that you require you bags to be checked only to LGW and not through checked to DUB.

You may then need to come up with a reason why you need them back at LGW (eg you're handing them off to a relative and travelling to Dublin with hand luggage only, something like that). If in doubt, just stand your ground at check in until you get what you want. It's not a term of the ticket that you have to through check your bags - it's a service offered for your convenience (at least in principle - the airlines probably also see it as a way to prevent passengers doing what you're doing: saving money on their ticket pricing rackets).

Worst case is your luggage gets through checked and one of you has to go on to Dublin to get it. It's not the end of the world!

Btw, is everyone on your booking ticketed to travel to Dublin? If there's anyone who is ticketed only as far as LGW, then have them check all the bags in in their name. That will ensure they turn up at LGW for collection.

ETA: the above is really just contingency planning. I've never had a problem with this, and done it quite a few times. Chances are you will be fine.

Slightly off topic but related:

I have come across the following deal on an upcoming trip to LA

My question is, would it be possible to miss out the Dublin to LHR legs? I assume missing the final section is straight forward but if I am not present at the start of the fare would that cancel the remaining flights?

Short answer: no to your first question, and yes to your second.
