No they don't want to live like SA and your assertion in this post demonstrates the lack of knowledge you have about these people. We should not do business with this terrible regime who are the biggest exporters of violence, extremism and terror in the world. Pragmatism has caused massive problems manifest in the Middle East. People who espouse it and cannot see beyond the short term are responsible for this chaos. The Saudis are pure evil and we have been on the wrong side of their argument with Iran for years and in the meantime they've exported their disgusting perversion of Islam around the world, unfettered by the USA addicted to their oil.
This.
And... quite!

The question for petrolheads should be: Should we stop doing business with SA and see the price of petrol & goods in the shops more than double within a few weeks?

What makes you think that would happen?

I think you'll find the majority of muslims support this view that we shouldn't be propping up the saudi's

S.A.Was created by the British and is now fully controlled by the U.S.A.Israel is the 51 and Saudi the 52nd State of the U.S.A.If Saudi ever collapsed and the people took over the influence of the States in the Middle East would be over.

The Americans won't allow this.Read the history and how the Saudis came to power. They betrayed their own kind in the Middle East and are totally subservient to the west.America.

This doesn't surprise me.
I used to work with a guy who worked for many years in Saudi.
He said how there was one set of rules for Nationals and western workers and another for filipinos.
They were treated like crap and were treated very harshly for the most minor of things and they met the sword very easily.

They will be bankrupt by 2020 unless barrel of oil is over $100 I read recently.

30 million people only 5.5 million work and over 3 million of those are government employees, the rest are on benefits.

No idea. Civil unrest maybe or can they just borrow more or print money?

I don't think that figure is quite the truth, the thing is alot the people who come under unemployed are actually silent partners to foreign run businesses or rent homes to foreigners as they are not allowed to own a business or a home outright. Happy to be corrected but I'm sure that's how it works over there.

It may not be quite the truth but it does highlight the fragility of Saudi. A substantial proportion of the population are 20 or below, I seem to recall around 50%. As the population has grown average living standards have fallen & prospects for the youth are significantly worse than for their parents. The disaffected youth will not turn to democracy but will look to an ISIS type organisation for salvation. The collapse of the current system will not bring democracy or freedoms. It will be the opposite & more extreme than we currently see. When people call for the collapse of the current regime I always say the same....be careful what you wish for.

Exactly. Some people are very naive when it comes to the world outside their village.

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have long been annoyed that everyone keeps suggesting they are anything like the Islamic State. Sure, they say, perhaps some of the laws on the books may look similar to the punishments in the extremist organization, but the Saudi kingdom is a sovereign state that abides by the rule of law and uses these punishments with discretion.

Now, reports in the Saudi press suggest that authorities have a new tactic for those who compare them to the Islamic State: taking them to court. According to a report in pro-government newspaper Al Riyadh, the Saudi justice ministry is planning to sue a Twitter user who suggested that a death sentence recently handed out to a Palestinian artist for apostasy was "ISIS-like."

"Questioning the fairness of the courts is to question the justice of the Kingdom and its judicial system based on Islamic law, which guarantees rights and ensures human dignity," a source in the justice ministry told the newspaper, according to a translation by Reuters. The ministry would not hesitate to sue "any media that slandered the religious judiciary of the Kingdom," the source added.

This basically answers the question. People who read new articles about the evils of the 'house of saud', and how they run their country need to just refer back to this post, and think to themselves, "are we as corrupt as them!?"...

Correct, read up on the history of ARAMCO.

Fratricide, the way forward in the Middle East.

Also in the UAE where Sheikh Zayed killed his ruling brother and all his family at the behest of the British government and materially assisted by the British army. This shameful episode was then airbrushed from history in order to maintain British influence in the UAE and the Gulf area generally.

Even to this day, Brits are very much respected in the UAE even to the extent that the British embassy staff in Abu Dhabi are infamous for preferring to make snidey deals with the local sheikhs over and above representing the interests of their country and UK nationals.
