My 56 plate ford focus 1.6 zetec is due a cam belt change.
I phoned a few garages for quotes but have been getting conflicting advice about whether it is driven by the water pump or alternator.
2 independent garages both said it doesn't need the water pump but my local ford dealer said it did need it.

How can I check? I don't know who to trust!

WP is run by the Aux belt from the Crank which also runs the alt, on early engines the pump sits behind the timming belt so it's best to change it at the same time as changing it later requires removing/replacing the belt again, later engines you can get the WP off without disturbing the belt, hense the conflicting info on wether to change the WP or not.

Right...so how do I know whether mine is one which should have the water pump changed or not?!

Lois, if you don't mind me asking what mileage is your focus and is it petrol or diesel?

I'm thinking changing mine it's currently at 75,500 mileage and it's a 55 model.

It's at 70,000 but I think the recommended time is 8 years. Mine was registered January 2007.
