I know that I am being stupid, but this watch:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Patek-Philippe-3970E-Pla...

Is worth £100K plus even without papers (it has an extract from the archives).

A replica is worth a few hundred.

What am I missing?

The seller has no feedback history for selling anything. Anyone with common sense would want to collect the watch in person, having satisfied themselves that they are buying what they have bid for. I would also want to check with Patek Philippe that the watch was not lost or stolen (if possible).

Probably an excellent example of "If it appears too good to be true....."

Caveat emptor....

I am sure that you are correct, but who on earth is bidding on it?!

I don't want to miss a bargain!

;-)

The seller got back to me. Because he is travelling a lot, payment has to be made, by card, to 'his company'. Mmmmm. That is about as dodgy as can be.

There you go, it's a scam simple as that. Even with no papers. a straight seller would be getting bids from trade in excess of £50k.

Nobody has bought a 3970P at £21k, and similarly nobody has sold a 3970P at £21k. All that could happen here is somebody loses £21k for a nonexistent watch.....

Scam.

Pictures and description lifted from matthew bain ( a well known dealer in the US).
Gone from his website, as it was sold, but still visible on chrono24 and marked as sold:

Not a user of the bay of tat, but is there a way to warn/alert the buyer the site itself? As from what's been said it would appear a crime is about to be committed?

I have contacted ebay to 'report' that I suspect it is in some way counter to their rules and regulations. Not sure what good it will do, but hopefully someone will not lose their money.

On a completely different note, the search continues.... What do you all think of the 5085/1A?.... It is nowhere near as nice as the 5054/J-001 gold version but quite a bit different in terms of price. Obviously I am buying a watch to impress others, so your opinion matters to me!

Don't like either of those; I don't like Roman numerals anywhere other than on a grandfather clock and I prefer leather straps to bracelets.

I tried one of those on last week, along with a few other Patek models I am considering.
It is a nice watch but the bracelet totally ruins it. To me it felt something like a vintage 60s beads of rice bracelet, which is nice on something like a vintage carrera, but felt out of place on something like this.

I could live with the bracelet that came with the 5711 which is obviously a fair bit chunkier, but this one didn't suit the watch at all really in my humble opinon.

(Caveat- i prefer leather straps on 99% of stuff, so my opinion may be somewhat biased)

In a way I agree. I am not keen on the bracelet, but I sweat so much that I cannot feasibly wear a leather strap. The smell emanating is quite overpowering within a few weeks....

Unfortunately the rolex oyster and presidential bracelets are the only two I really like and they are, well, just so common now. Besides, I have been suckered into the Patek advertising slogan of looking after it until the next generation.

I like the bracelet (never seem to get a leather one to sit comfortably as they're almost double thickness by the time I've wrapped them around my Skinny Wrist™) but, to my eye, the hands are too weak for the bracelet and I've never liked a reserve dial on the face. It has the (optional?) crystal back, so why not put it there nice and discretely? It's 48 hours, not 48 minutes & doesn't need checking that often.

If you're looking at Patek, maybe the Nautilus as that has a lovely bracelet and has a dial proportioned to match.

ETA: The 5712 is surely the same movement if it's complications you desire:

I have been wearing a 5054R every day for years and love it partly because nobody notices it.

The wrong watch if you want to impress anyone.
