Hello

I have got a very old Pioneer car stereo and it has just packed up. There is a multi-cd player in the boot. When I tried to buy a new stereo I was told that I won't be able to use the cd-player any more because it's impossible to buy a modern head unit with the correct adaptor. Is that right? Sounds a bit crazy to me but then I am not exactly very up on these things. I don't have an Ipod or ipad etc and just want to be able to play cds. Any suggestions?

Thanks very much

Go on ebay and find a matching used head-unit. There's usually plenty available, do you know the model number.

You will probably find a few models from the same manufacture of the same era will work.

thanks. I have had a good look on e-bay, which hadn't occurred to me, and there are some head units that are described as compatible with multi-players. Just surprised that modern units aren't.

Unless you absolutely have to use CDs for some reason, I'd not bother with the changer. Modern car CD players will play MP3 CDs. Rip them on your computer, and copy 10 albums to one mp3 CD.
Even better, get a car stereo with a USB port, rip your CDs, and copy them to a USB memory stick. A 16gb stick will hold about 250 albums.

yes

cd changers in the boot are the past. Just don't bother replacing like for like.

Buy a modern stereo which plays mp3, then just stick a CD in to your PC and fill with MP3's (you can fit a lot on it).

Better is to buy a newish car stereo with Bluetooth. Means you can connect it to your mobile phone and can control music stored on your phone to play via car speakers, plus if you run sat nav on your phone then that will also play via the car too (music will seamlessly stop when sat nav speaks and then resume).

blimey - things have moved on. My phone is only one step on from the kind that people used to have on the wall but clearly I need to get myself updated a bit. I had no idea that I could get so much onto one disc. Incredibly helpful - thanks very much

Some stereos have a USB outlet on the rear. Run a short lead to the glove box, or similar cubby hole, then put a cheap USB memory stick as suggested. It's similar to what my Father did with his VX220 as there's not room to keep CD's!
