I've heard that the older model with pop up headlights is more spacious. Is this true?

Yes. But maybe not with the roof up. Why not sit in one?

Yes, probably. I think it depends if you're long legged (you'll struggle) or have a long torso (you'll sit high but a foamectomy on the seat will drop you and inch or so).

I think the Mk1 and Mk2 cabin are the same size but the Mk1 has less intrusive trim (or just less trim)

I'm 6'4 and I fit in my quite well, although I'm more legs than torso. Seat right back, and sun visor delete perhaps?

I'm 6ft 2" and asked a similar Q on here not long ago! I have a Mk 3 (allegedly the most cramped interior I think?) and fit just fine with soft top up or down. Seat is all the way back and I suppose I'm more torso than leg. No substitute really for just going and checking 1 out. I sat in a Mk 2 (roof on) quite happily with room to spare when I was looking for mine.

On ANOther forum the (partial) solution seems to be a flat bottomed steering wheel and a foamectomy i.e. reduce the amount of foam in the seat squab.
HTH.
Cheers, Pewe.

isn't the NB more cramped than the NC for tall drivers?

not sure though

NB = Mk2
NC = Mk3

I'm 6"5 and fairly evenly balanced in terms of torso and legs tongue out
I fit in my MK1 but I have a smaller 30cm wheel and have taken foam out of the seats. It's fine day to day but I get a sore back on longer journeys.

I'm 6ft5 and have just got a mk1. Its easily driveable for me, although I sit a bit too high and a bit too close to the pedals for my personal liking. I have a seat of VX220 seats I plan to install in the not too distant future and they should hopefully give more space (even if I have to bolt them directly to the floor!). Taking off the door pull and replacing with a leather strap would make things more comfortable too. I drove it 80 odd miles the weekend before last and it was no bother at all.

A few years back my local dealer had all 3 models on his forecourt and was kind enough to let me sit in all 3. mk1 & mk2 were similar but the mk2 had a slightly fatter interior which meant less space. mk3 I could get in but my hair rubbed on the roof, I just couldn't quite get the seat low enough (although I think differing years have different seats). again bigger transmission tunnel made it feel more cramped too....

I used to have Lotus Elise S2 seats (same as VX220 seats) in my Mk2.5 fitted to the stock runners and I had more head & leg room than I knew what to do with! I'm 6'2" long body shape but I probably had 6" leg and 2" headroom to spare.

I am 6'6" and have had 5 mk1 and mk2 MX5 over the years. The MK2 is more comfortable and I ran one as my only car for over a year including through some heavy snow where it was brilliant because it was so light. I had to take off the drivers door grab handle to make more room for my right leg as it was difficult to get though the gap and I am slim! If i sat up straight my head was pressed into the roof and the mechanism was right next to my head so a little dangerous! Essentially you will fit but there are adjustments that will make it more comfortable. I would recommend a smaller steering wheel and and a seat that can go back further and sits lower. Taking the foam out barely helps deapite many claims it is good. Worth noting I bought a 2003 SLK to replace it and despite having good leg room it had terrible head room, the MX5 was better.
