Hi all, probably the wrong forum (mods move if there's a better one).

I'm looking for a decent ski jacket (Goretex) but almost all the Goretex ones I've seen are these thin 'shell' type ones. I really don't like the idea of these things, although a lot of advice is to 'layer' up underneath, I don't fancy it, I like a nice thick warm waterproof jacket.

Any recommendations for a Goretex insulated warm jacket?

Cheers.

Depends on how much you want to spend. Arc'teryx do the Stikine jacket. It's £700 though.

Their gear is very good and has a lifetime warranty, and of the bits and pieces I have is all excellent quality.

Nice jacket!!! mmmmmmm, £700 is a couple of hundred over my top budget, but a lifetime guarantee might swing it! Going to see if I can get it cheaper somewhere first!

If you can do without the ski features i.e. a snow skirt, then arc'teryx do the fission SV which is about £450. Otherwise I just found this http://www.ellis-brigham.com/products/norrona/mens... and I'm sure there are others from other brands which fulfil your criteria. The backcountry.com website is very good for searching through a wide range of brands although it is American so you can't order from there (annoying when you see the prices!)

FWIW I'd go the shell route with a decent base- and mid-layer....

Norrona are worth looking at.

I much prefer the flexible layering method though. I have a Norrona Lofoten goretex shell, a Norrona lightweight insulated mid layer and an Icebreaker Merino wool base layer. This keeps me warm most of the time. When in Zermatt over New Year it was -22 at the top and I needed an additional thin fleece with those temperatures (+ wind chill).

I bought a Patagonia shell jacket to replace an old Eider one that had insulation in.....have since invested in Icebreaker 260 weight base layer as I wasn't warm enough with my old base layer when skiing over Christmas.

That's exactly why I didn't want to go down the 'shell' route. I much prefer a nice thick soft warm jacket rather than something that feels like a plastic bag! I've bought the Norrona Lofoten one in the end from Absolute Snow at £280. Goretex with Primaloft insulation.

I'll report back when it arrives.

£280 for a Norrona Lofoten is an excellent buy (and price!). I paid £350 for my Lofoten shell (down from £499). Really high quality stuff.

What are you intending on using it for? If plain skiing a £250-300 Saloman from Decathalon will be perfectly fine and last you many seasons.

My one I picked up for £375 - it was reduced from a much higher value (end of season discounts but I was happy with it). Its lasted 8 years worth of skiing and is still perfectly fine.
Take the opposite view SWMBO choose based on what it looked like (turned out a mere £100 it was useless and binned after one season then went trek similar but slightly better she managed 2 seasons out of it - that's 2 weeks skiing!
