Tamy is due to visit Autoglass on Tuesday for a replacement windscreen.

My query is whether, the night before, I should remove the top seal to treat the rusting metal subframe. It looks like the weather will be dry. Autoglass have said I can treat the car after the screen is removed. I don't want to be hanging around waiting for them to remove the screen but will if need be.

Is the seal just to weather the screen and targa with the screen bonded in place?

Cheers.

I seriously suggest you put them of until you can get a pair of these
http://tvr-parts.com/tvr-parts/part-details/tvr-u2....

It is unlikely they will wait and give you the time to remove, de-rust, prime and paint then refit the old mild steel plates that will have rusted quite badly.

You will need a rivet gun and 8 rivets (not sure of size).

Cheers

Haven't got the time for that, unfortunately.

I'm going to remove the outer seal and treat what gets exposed. Do need some minor bits from TVR parts so shall add them to the list for future fitting.

TVR , it's a life choice!

Having seen the state of mine when my screen was replaced earlier last year I'd strongly second the above.

Thanks for the offer but don't worry this time. Outlaws live in Sandhurst so can pop in 'en route'.

Unfortunately, I am at capacity for jobs at the moment. Screen has to be fixed just don't have the time to add on anything more than a rust treatment.

There are liability issues entailed in bonding a windscreen in to a rusty aperture and you may find that Autoglass will remove it and then wash their hands of the job until you rectify the corrosion. In theory they could be gluing a screen in to an area of rust which may then bubble more and leak or worse still fail on impact causing the screen to pop out.

OP, if it helps this was the state of mine and this was the better side. Not at all uncommon according to Paul (Glassman on here) and theres no way they could be sufficiently cleaned up and bonded onto.

Well, if it's that bad then I'll have to reorganise some things. Will lift the seal tonight and treat what I can.

Hi Stewart,

If I were you, I'd just do it once. With stainless. It will only come back and bite you if you don't.

I know you are busy, but you will end up spending even more time messing about getting the screen removed & refitted later on when there are more important things to be done.
Do it right. Do it once.

Sorry, I'm probably out of order, but just my two penneth.

Regards,

Glen

No offence taken Glen.

I fully agree, it is going to bug me that it's not done. However, Tamy will get a new interior in due course which will mean the screen out so that appeases me slightly.

Just lifted the seal and it's not bad. The top rail is poor and I've treated the whole exposed area. Off to drop it off now. I'll have to see what the fitter says.

I have checked with TVR Parts and they have them in stock so if need be I'll call off sick and drive there tomorrow. Does any one know the type of pop rivet used? It's not a stupidly long one? Please let it be a standard size.

Got here and the new screen has a scratch in it. Right I the driver's sight line on the curve section. They are trying to polish it out but they are struggling. Looks like I'll have the chance to fit the s/s items.

Make sure you check the fit once done. Paul only used Original screens from Racing Green on mine and even then the first fitted perfectly one side but not the other, had to be swapped for a different one. Any poor fit at all reject it.

Tamy is done. There was a bit of rust under the screen but the guy has treated that yesterdeay. If he'd asked I'd have shown him the treatment kit in the footwell! Screen is curing now so due to collect around 3pm.

Right, now the heater module to fix and relocate.

Picked up Tamy and all seems well. Final bit of trimming needed on some silicone that has squeezed out of the trim. I'll let it cure for a good few days before running a sharp knife over it.

On to the next job.

Out of interest, what did he treat it with?

One of the branded rust converters. They said that there wasn't very much rust at all and was confident that the section didn't need respraying.

ETA It's leagues better than the screen in my S photos of which I've posted pics for you before.
