This has been parked near a friend's place for a little while. Haven't stopped to look inside, looks like it has seen some action though.

I've been wondering... what's the closest modern equivalent to the venerable 968?

It strikes me it's a perfect 'everything' car: 2+2, enough power to be quick, can handle a bit of track fun, yet usable everyday and with a big enough boot for bikes and tip runs...

I can't think of anything beyond a GT86, but that wouldn't be right... at this rate maybe I'll just have to get a 968!

Lotus Evora (apart from the boot)

New Ford Mustang (apart from the proper engine & proper rear seats)

BMW 235 (as above)

GT86 has to be the modern incarnation though doesn't it, in fundamentals at least? Though, if I'm honest, I'd imagine that the actual modern day 968 would actually be the audi TT (think about it).

Also, if you ever want to source your own parts and save an absolute packet, feel free to get in touch. Just got ATE front discs from Germany for £275 all in, about a £130 saving compared to pretty much everywhere else for OEM quality.
Interesting, does your supplier do E34 bits too?

You'll want google translate on your browser. Not sure if the choice there is any good for the e34. I've never used them before getting these front discs and probably never will again unless it's for the same.

Tend to just go with carparts4less and the like.

eek Seriously? How does that work? No lights? No mudguards? But you can still drive it to the pub?

Too old for an MOT helps a bit plus not 'bumping' into Mr Plod on the way to/from the pub hehe

Nice. Subtle. Cracking deal. No brainer IMO.

Fixed price motoring looks more and more appealing. Just too busy these days to be faffing around with old stuff, even if that's where the heart still lies.

Wondering whether to admit to progress, cash in my chips and go 520d like the rest of the world.

Tell me about it. Another strange noise from the S124 E280 over the weekend... seems to be generating a massive bill a couple of times a year now.

There's nothing more depressing than spending £2k on basically a new cooling system (new rad, hoses, water pump and sundries) then realising that the new polyrib belt has put the air pump under more strain so that is now chattering when the car is cold. £1k + VAT for a new air pump - just no.

I do love driving it, it is so relaxing, but my patience is starting to wear thin. That Golf R looks amazing.

So if anyone can point me somewhere that might sell the rubber inserts that would be most enlightening.
You're looking for a rubber insert that's either from a set of Toyota roof bars, or is from the roof of your Toyota?

Hmmm, where to start...
They won't sell the inserts, just whole new roof bars, in pairs of course.
Sorry for late response (and ambigous story), it is the rubber strip from the cross bar (that I attach my bike rack to). I need to pull the remaining rubber strip out and take it to somewhere and see if they have lengths of the stuff (it has a uniform profile across, a bit like a giant wiper blade).

A challenge as I can't think of the answer.

A modern Intergrale type car, that isn't an impreza.

£8-15k
4wd
250-300bhp
Not R32 levels of thirst.

Girlfriend/suit and tie friendly.

Ideally, I'd like a 4wd cooper S, a tiny bit bigger, but they don't seem to make them.

Answers on a postcard, pair of socks for the winner.
The answer?

Golf R. Ordered my 'lease spec' 5 dor earlie this week, £6,500 all in for two years. Will be with me for Feb, but will wait until March.

A fellow threadist had a punt in a slightly muted one yesterday and declared it a car for all jobs and all people (or something along those lines)
It has arrived...

Well done that man. Great car, right colour, right number of doors. Question: Can you modify? I've heard 310 with a remap or 340 with remap plus intake is possible... but on a leaser?

A number of stories regarding blown turbos on these. Evidently, VW have SW which will detect any change to ECU settings.

There was a tread on Ph a few weeks ago where an owner (post via his friend) was assured by the tuning company that their remap was undetectable. Turbo went, VW dealer ran diagnostics, Map change detected, warranty void.

I'm always surprised when companies claim their map is undetectable. If they themselves can go in and see it then there's always the potential for someone else to do the same.
