A mate took me out in his rather nice old Saab 9-5 Aero a while back, it has nearly 390bhp and was startlingly quick especially in the midrange!
Apparently 300bhp is less than a grand and you can buy a belter for £2500, I reckon I might've found the next Scouse Q-Car....

Here's his 9-5, the Suspension drop and Hirsch alloys give it a purposeful look.....

Love that.

Sure 390bhp through the front wheels makes no sense, but who wants to be sensible.

390bhp and FWD? Sounds like a straight line hero to me. Bear in mind that the £2500 it costs to tune it to 390bhp would buy you a 370bhp XJR.
I has a Quaife LSD and is remarkably civilised, also everyone expects an XJR to be quick, they don't ever expect an old Saab to be just that quick, also part of the build was billet rods and forged pistons, so he's just a turbo away from 450bhp plus!!!

Any rational person would be looking at e39 M5s or XJRs but most £5-7k ones are total moneypits (remember as you all know I think the e39 M5 should available on the NHS) my point is you can get a good Aero for £2-3k and a reliable 300bhp is less than a grand away, my pals engine stands him at less than £4k including the LSD and uprated brakes, they are proper tanks in terms build quality.

OH! and they have sublimely comfortable seats...

You can get good power out of these cheaply with the benefit of RWD and even greater sleeperishness.

Good purchasing! Headlights could use a polish though.

I think the early estates look great.

First thing I did - Meguiars kit. Brilliant, like new in minutes.

That and a new bonnet badge tidied the front up no end.

I've never owned a Saab.

The only time I've driven one was as a wet-behind-the ears trainee solicitor. My new boss flung me the keys to his new 9-3 pram as he headed out of the door to catch a plane and told me to move it somewhere safe for the weekend. Moving the thing was fine. Working out how to get the f-ing key out of the f-ing ignition, on the other hand, was considerably less fun.

Those funny Swedes.

I hate to say it, but there's no way I'd buy a GT3 in today's market, as much as I think it's a far superior car to the Exige. The market is just too overheated at the moment for me, when the bubble bursts I don't want to be the one stood in the middle of it.
And here you are wrong... wink

Joel is talking about buying a LHD GT3 - either a 996.2 CS or a 997.1 CS. Both cars come to about £45k imported and registered on UK plates. Are you telling me that they will be £25k tomorrow? Prey do tell what makes you think that? Porsche is about to make more purely analogue GT cars like the 996?

Oh, and on this doom-and-gloom note, if a Full Porsche Switzerland Service History 996.2 GT3 CS, with no accidents whatsoever and with a lot of Manthey stuff on it suddenly is worth £25k, what is the plastic fantastic from Hettel going to be worth? Surely you are not suggesting that it will still be worth the £25k that Joel is about to pay?

Don't get me wrong, that particular Exige is easily one of the best in the country. I have driven it from London to the Ring and back, did a DN track day in it while there and loved it while on track. The rest of the time it was absolutely pants and should not be in the same sentence as a GT3, even the lowly leatherette-clad 996.

Anyways, I am off to book a slot with WBAC for 2016, because clearly no-one would want to buy my 996.1 CS for more than a pack of crisp wink

Nice. Sensible price, too. I'm sure I saw something similar (low mileage maybe) advertised at £17k.

Really? My view is obviously distorted by some of the silly UK prices, but that sounds like sensible pricing. I'd even put up with LHD at that price!

Linky to one please? Don't know where I'd look for Swiss cars.

This one is a bit more, but it is lower miles that the one Joel has his sights on... The esteemed threadists would have to excuse me, but I would not link to Joel's particular car - nothing personal, but I have seen it on other forums, where a car has been shown and the buyer has had it "nicked" under his nose. I know it is a free market and all that, but Joel is a slow-burner. It takes time, or perhaps I should lend him my car for a weekend, to convince him that the Deutscher Schwein as an overall package is far superior than the one trick pony from Norfolk...

Wow - £46k. Looks nice (apart from that continental need to change wheels).

I think your £50k would be safe in that one! smile

not so sure your £400k would be safe in a 4.0RS or a 993RS though... And I certainly wouldn't want £1m tied up in a 2.7RS right now!

I think my 911 needs would be satisfied by this white 997GT3 and the black targa '73 car with an S engine from a couple of pages back!

Trust me, I paid a lot less for the 996.1 CS in my garage. I agree that prices look toppy, but it is all relative I guess. When Ferraris and Lambos command 6 and 7 figure sums, the "special" 911s still look "cheap".

Also, I have witnessed it first hand... For example, until Putin and Obama got into a spat, there were more than 500,000 Muscovites with more than USD1mm of cash on account; ready and willing to spend it on something like property or a flash car. I would imagine, the situation in China etc is the same. There is just sooooo much cash sloshing around the system. Granted, it could all end in tears at some point in the future, but to see the "bubble" in special cars burst, I think you will need to see the bubble in stocks/bonds/property burst too. If that happens, then I think the value of your 997 4.0RS is going to be way down the list of your problems. Moreover, you could have had fun with it. Somehow, owning Evraz bonds or Vimpelcom shares does not have the same ring to it.

Anyway, I cannot wait until the 27th April when Sally (yes, that's how my 4.5yrs old daughter called my Clubbie) makes a return to to its spiritual home - Olaf's garage and the one-way-toll-road-next to it...
