I read that CAR article whilst lay across the back seat of mother's brand spanking new, sickly sweet smelling white 1.9 GTi, on the way to our faraway holiday destination to "run the new car in".

Seem to remember eventually being told to STFU after gabbling on too much about how the new family transport was indeed better than an Esprit.
Late hols? That came out November

My friend picked up his first new car a year before, a white 1.9 205 Gti

even though the cost to build must have been obscene, the absolute best conversion has to be the ferrari 456gt venice. the craftmanship superb and the hatch treatment is just perfect. not to mention the feat of adding rear doors! however its best achievement has to be making a resolved, great looking gt car, into an equally resolved proto-uber-barge

Na, the B-pillar treatment is all wrong. And the rear 'quarterlight' could have been made to look far more integrated.

yes

Also memorable for the fact that one particular part of the A74 looked very different on the way home. What was left of it anyway. frown

That white E-reg 1.9 got replaced a couple of years later........

......... With a brand new H-reg 1.9 ......in white

All in all, between 4 of us, we had 6 1.9s from the local dealer in just over 4 years - 3 white, 1 red, 2 graphite ( 1 was a 309 though )

Was lucky enough to be up close to one of my all time favourite cars a couple of Sundays ago and then a few days later saw it being roadtested 'enthusiastically' on my local b roads.....what a noise ears

Risky driving aside, this sounds mighty and is doing nothing to subdue the hankering for one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RCgv7iYk3o

Apropos the notes on L322's a few pages back; not since the E28 has a door shut with such joyful thud'age.

Does sound bloody good but by Gawd those worry beads would drive me mad!

Tonight I quite fancy some E32/4 action......

I've tried to be an optimist for as long as possible but I've come to accept they're utter money pits to run properly.

See now, I find the L322 door 'clang' to be a bit cheap sounding.

for vault-like integrity, I nominate the Volvo 240 for the most reassuring door thud; closely followed by the Merc 124.

Maybe a bit of a rolling resto but looks decent value to me at £17k, especially compared to what's out there. Albeit for somebody with 'nads bigger and pockets deeper than mine of course.

I reckon one of these could make M5 ownership seem economical.
