Well I'll happily be called a snob for having an opinion of car park muppets who are just a bloody pain in the ass to everyone. The selfish bds have their fun at the expensive of everyone else trying to go about their normal daily business. Why the hell should I have any respect for anyone who sits in a car park and will randomly fire up the car to delight their little crowd of brain dead friends, I'd like to go late night shopping please, can I go without driving through what looks like a fusion of Lord of the Rings and Le Mans? If you do dare to cast a glance in their direction you will likely be met with 'wot u faaacking lookin' at m8' or when you leave will have a stty car making a st ton of noise glued to your bumper, only to turn around at the roundabout give you a blast of the horn and return to the nest. Vermin. The should all be sold for experimentation.
Fine statement.

What's funny is in 20 years, those from the McDonald's car park will have exactly the same sentiment about whatever 'young people' are doing at the time.

"Yes we were all young once and did stupid things, but back then it was all about parking up together and having a chat at McDonald's, where generally the police would come and tell you to naff off if you mis-behaved."

To be honest, they're in a McDonald's car park and you shouldn't be going there if you're a grown up anyway. Plus it's funny to see them all every now and then, it's like a little zoo / creche. From the police's perspective, they're probably happier with them parked up in an abandoned car park under CCTV surveillance than out involved in nefarious activities.

Who you're describing aren't car people, they're bottom-feeders who don't know how to behave and would do so badly parked outside a children's play area on push bikes, in a group outside the local shop or outside a pub. The fact that they drive a modified car shows that they're somewhat interested in motoring but, it's a totally different scene (if you will) where they combine bad taste (considered good taste depending on who you are) with being anti-social because to them, p1ssing you off is fun. They aren't driving around appreciating a little hum from their exhaust like someone with a more normal mindset. For example, we have three local kids around here and they own...

- A yellow Saxo with biohazard stuff all over the trim, "scene" alloy wheels and slammed on its backside and exhaust
- A Mk1 Polo slammed on steel wheels and exhaust
- A Corsa C again slammed, with alloywheels and some crazy upswept winkle-looking pipe

There's no question, the cars look awful but, the guys are very pleasant and enjoy what they drive. They don't scream at passers buy or terrorise the roads but, they do like the adrenaline rush that owning a car which sounds a little sporty gives them; they're just having fun and are well aware that they're nothing incredible.

Some people like yourself might get p1ssed off at the noise but then again, I get the hump with people who at 7am on a weekend start the fking lawnmower or hedge trimmer.

Seems a bit like basing an opinion of supercars on young Arabs behaving like tts in Mayfair.

No, you buffoon. Did you read what I wrote? I whole heartedly agreed with Yonex regarding the chavs he/she has experienced in the car park. They're senseless and as I said, out to be anti-social however, you also have good kids out there, from many backgrounds who take a passion in owning and customising their car who, will gather in a car park as it is a large meeting place which gives them an opportunity to socialise with like minded people. You don't tend to find these people mixing with the chavs to be honest.
I've stood and spoken to these guys on a number of occasions now as I cut through a local, rural car park while walking my dogs.

You've got a major chip on your shoulder, that much is clear but, like I also say, if you're one of the morons who starts up power tools outside, early on a weekend then you too are making senseless and inconsiderate noise. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Let people be, and be happy.

About the most sensible things said in the last couple of pages.

YOnex, chances are the elders at the time all thought you were a total knob but you couldn't see it like that at the time as you were having too much fun!! Everyone has been guilty of something similar!!!

1Addicted - Agree completely, exhaust noise is just another example of how we all have different standards. I get sick and tired listening to my neighbour screaming at her kid , i get fed up of the gardeners using petrol mowers and wood chippers at silly times in the morning , I get irritated by a neighbours dog which can sometimes bark for hours but find there are usually more important things in live to concern me.

I find it incredibly frustrating that PH is so naive and hypocritical when it comes to modified cars and the constant rubbish about chavs in hatchbacks is so so boring.

edit as I messed up the multi quote.

+ SS7 - your Porscheclap wonderful.

I'm a quiet, understated sort of chap, so I like quiet, understated cars. Boys in Saxos with 4" outlets are annoying, and modern supercars programmed with a loud flare of exhaust noise on starting are just embarrassing.

But then I went and built this:

Your sweeping generalisations are hilarious. I used to go sit in car parks with my friends in our cars when I was younger, and yes most were either lowered or had exhausts or both.

There were some idiots who would rev the nuts of their cars, there were some who would handbrake turn to try and impress people, there were some that would scrape over speedbumps so much they would get stuck and block McDonalds car park for an hour hehe .
But there were also most others who would sit in the cars, have a chat, go get some food and drive home. We all had a lot of friends, 20-30 people were out a lot of nights and we all liked meeting very regularly, do you know where 30+ 17/18 years olds could meet up on a weekday evening? No nor do any of them. The only thing we could do was meet in our cars, and when 20-30 teenagers meet there will be some idiots, but if 30+ 18/19 year olds met up to drink in a pub every night there would be some idiots there too.

Like someone else has said, in 20 years they will be on PH ranting about the same sorts of things, because people grow up and change. I have, I'm now 22, have a lot less close friends, we meet in their houses now due to most having moved out and the only times we go to McDonald's car park is to get food to cure a hangover on a Sunday morning! laugh
But as with all things the next gen of 'boy racers' fill the spaces at night, does that bother me or anyone with any sense....nope! biggrin

I really don't see what the big deal is over the size of an exhaust, everybody to their own. I like the look of huge pipes on Jap motors, I don't like it on the saxo but maybe the owner does.

I can't understand what you are trying to say but I assume you are saying that if anybody likes the look of that they should be avoided? Pretty sad if you ask me.
Very sad people if they believe those exhausts enhance the appearance of their cars. They are pure, unadulterated wk, irrespective of whether they have been badly fitted to a bodykitted Saxo or a clapped out Subaru. The Subaru ones are worse if anything, the "Gruff, off-beat note" sounds more like it's running on three cylinders.

No more so than chavs who run louder exhausts on their impreza. See how this game works?

The main problem for me is not the noise, a car won't usually make a loud noise on its own.
The fact is when people have a bigger and louder exhaust they tend to make sure everyone knows about it.
You can drive a loud car sensibly without trying to get loads of attention to yourself but it is just never the case.
When you're on a hoon a nice sounding exhaust can make you smile but when you're around town and you're blipping the throttle on downshifts and accelerating aggressively in first gear that is just cockish.
Of course the car isn't going to be silent if you've upgraded the exhaust but there is no need to drive it like a hooligan around town so everyone knows just how loud it can be.

This is the key i believe. i dont agree with people blasting in their saxos and 106's with big exhausts.

But if you have a car that sounds relatively quiet when only doing low revs but sounds great after is perfect. as you can do your daily drive or long journey in peace and feel like a rally driver as the op put it when hooning round the mountains and nsl countryside roads
