07/08 golf 1.4 TSI.....Anyone own?
Discussion
Seems the wife has fallen for the golfs.....Fair enough, but she's found the 1.4 tsi 170's....and think's they might be the answer to all our wishes.....
Anyone got one - decent to drive? Guessing the need some revving to get them going - are they geared ok for motorway miles ?
Do the superchargers have a lifespan/major service interval ?
real life fuel consumption ?
Thanks in advance...again. The b7 2.0 220bhp has sold......Grrrrrr

They nippy the supercharger handles the lower revs the turbo takes over so it's never lacking
unfortunately that's where the good news stops they may have issues with oil consumption misfires I'm sure many will say avoid
Not worried about oil consumption, i can buy a whole barrel for like $50...................unfortunately that's where the good news stops they may have issues with oil consumption misfires I'm sure many will say avoid
i guess its a pretty highly strung engine.
Timing chains can be problematic on these (a lot of MK5s needed them replacing) as can the manual gearbox synchromesh. Supercharger/ Turbo failures are uncommon but not unheard of.
I would agree with the above that the GTI could be a better option. Similar economy and a much stronger engine.

My March 07 TSI 170 has now done over 160,000 miles and is still going strong. Contrary to comments about oil usage, mine uses minimal oil between each 10,000 mile service. The car computer suggests around 40-42 mpg, but in reality it is more like 37-39 mpg. Search for other posts from me if you need more info about timing chains, gearbox synchro, wing corrosion, etc. I have owned it from new and I aim to keep it up to at least 200,000 miles and possibly 250,000 miles.
I think the two positive replies from the owners tell you what you need to know, rather than the other 'I've heard' posts. I've had one each as courtesy cars, and the 140 is OK, nice to drive, but the 170 is very nice, lots of go. MPG seemed good too, over the two days I had both.

cheers again guys.
The wife found a local 140 5dr with leather. Seems nice enough, 60k with the belt done, a recent turbo change ( dealer). Asking 7200 though, seems a tad steep, guessing he's shelled out a right few quid on that dealership turbo change !!!!
I'm right in thinking the general consensus is there are no clear winners when it comes to 140 vs 170 right ? ( other than the 30bhp)

£7200 will comfortably get you into a Mk6 1.4 TSI so it's a bit too much to pay for a Mk5 IMO
RE 140 vs 170 mechanically there isn't much difference, but obviously the components in the 170 are under more stress. They both used to remap to the same 200bhp figure if I remember right.
Also my experience is based on owning a 1.4 TSI immediately followed by a GTI. Both had there fair share of problems but the TSIs were a lot bigger and more expensive to fix (although fortunately covered under warranty). Currently running a boring and sensible 2.0 TDI...

Condition looks great from the pictures

Or A3 2.0T / Seat Cupra of similar age.
Nobody said 5dr was boring....
I bet it shifts at 320bhp. Hows the fuel economy at that ???
I think we have the problem of having over though it. Petrol vs derv had no clear winner for us. Then it was a4 vs a3. Then it was a3 vs golf. Then someone mentioned 4wd. Then S-line leather....The list goes on.
There IS this, which i reckon i can get a fair whack cheaper than the asking price......
