Mods, apologies if this is in the wrong place.

Got a large flat LG telly which has gone pop. Standby lit still working but it just shut off and won't work now.

Anyone had this or have any ideas? Is it scrap or is there some work around for it?

Google LG Capacitor problem. Its quite common with some of their models.

Is possible to fix it yourself but I just found a local guy who did it for £40. Works perfectly now.

90% of the time (possibly more) when a flat screen TV fails it is a capacitor in the power supply. Planned failure really, they choose to put nice cheap 85 degree C capacitors in the toasty hot power supply, knowing that they will fail in not many years and people will think they are unrepairable or can't be bothered.

As above, capacitor on the Power PCB. My Samsung suffered the same, got one of the electronics guys at work to fix it for free!

I suspected it might be something doable, the telly is probly under 2 years or so old.

If it's a capacitor for the power supply, how come the standby light still works tho?

I am not electrically savvy, btw.

The power circuit is separate from the standby circuit

No, i think it was part of a deal when you get a new iphone or playstation or something. I'll check tonight.

How much should a lectrician charge to fix it?

Yes the great Capacitor problem. I have a 40 inch Samsung here that was going to be chucked out, it cost me £1.99 to repair.

yes I sure did. Hate to think how much it would have cost me to have it done professionally.

Took it apart and it was obvious what ones were dead. They had bulged/split on the top. Identified the correct ratings (voltage/capacitance) but changed them for a higher operating temperature.

Been working now without fault for about 4 odd years and is our main TV.

Ask around for a tv repair guy, they are still about.
They dont have shops like they used too.

I would say to budget £40 to £60 for such a repair

we had this exact issue with an LG TV, bought from richer sounds and after a bit of hassle they changed it for a newer model - only six months old or so.

Good luck - post if you get it sorted

Will do, having a look at it in a bit. I suspect i'll let a proper lectrician do it tho, i'm a danger to myself and others with this kind of thing.
