In the same way as I miss the White shirt and black tie. They look better, more traditional. From a practicality aspect though, black wicking shirts, combat trousers and flat caps win hands down.

Try carrying a portion of fish and chips underneath a flat cap!

It's tricky, and a little messy, but it can be done.

Only time I ever saw those up here was during the G8 at Gleneagles when cops and vehicles were brought in from all over.

Anyone and everyone can wear yellow flouro high viz. attire.

The hat could help identify the ones that are police officers. It's one way to differentiate police officers from random private sector security providers?

There's probably a cost implication. I expect flat caps are cheaper.
It's not that long ago that specials were issued with helmets to replace their flat caps to make them look like real policemen.
H and S was the official excuse given mind you.

Do any current or former BiB have any experience of where a helmet has helped ward off a potential head injury?

Besides making officers more visible how much use are they if they're worn without the chin strap being used? They're quite easy to dislodge when the strap isn't used?

No reason for foot beats not to wear helmets, its not all sprinting and vaulting walls chasing criminals. Helps them stand out in the crowd though they would tend to mess up some of the gelled creations sported by some of the youngsters in the job

No, I agree. Although if we are going on that basis, there's no reason for foot patrol not to still wear the tunic!

There'll still be plenty of traditional helmets in the force long after they've phased their hats out.

A Foot patrol officer is just as vulnerable as a mobile driver once that driver is out of their car -again -not every job a car is sent to involves threats and violence either.

Don't disagree. Not sure what that's got to do with my post though.
