I pay half an hour for lunch making a paid day 8.5 hours but another employer mate doesn't he pays an 8 hour day and his staff work 9 - 5.30. I called him tight, he called me mad - who is right?

Getting paid for lunch isn't normal. But if you're happy, why change? I'm sure thr staff love "money for nothing"

getting paid for lunch is not the norm in any job with fixed shifts ... it also makes it rather easier to prove that you are meeting your obligations under H+S legislation with regard to breaks for those whose shift is 6 hours or more.

Thats rather generous. Whenever I was younger in a hourly paid role, I never got paid for lunch. So much so, I made sure I took my full lunch everyday, I wasn't missing a minute of it. Paid lunch's now, company give me an hour, I may take 5/10 minutes, to eat my lunch, then I'm back at work. I think it works better if your staff have good ethics

My staff have a 15 min paid break at 11 and 3 as well as 30 mins for lunch so I guess I am paying an hour a day

paid breaks are far more common as it allows the breaks to be moved or foreshortened if there's a particular need ...
