Ok, so I've been lurking around the readers cars forum for ages now and since ive just got a new car I thought I would share some pictures with you all along with my motoring history...

I will start with my new car, it's a 2014 Ford Focus 1.0 Ecoboost in Zetec Navigator specification with the appearance pack. My wife and I are expecting our first child so we needed something to replace 2010 Ford Fiesta 1.25 which was a 3dr and the boot wasn't big enough to fit the pram in. So over the Xmas holidays we went off car shopping and after looking at all sorts including a Vauxhall Mokka, Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 2007 we decided on the Focus bases on the boot, cabin and rear leg room as well as the safety features and excellent value for money. Plus topped of by the fact that I have always been a 'Ford fan' as you will see from my car history (to follow).

As I've said it a Zetec Navigator with the appearance pack so it comes with built in sat nav, tinted windows 17" alloys and a couple of other little bits that I won't bore you with.
Performance wise I am very impressed, it's so hard to believe that it's 'just a little 1.0' but to be fair I did expect it as the reviews seem to speak very highly of the Ecoboost engine/Focus combo.
Fuel economy though I did expect better, we seem to be getting around 38-40mpg just driving around the doors but I was expecting slightly more but I'm not disappointed and after 2 weeks we are more than happy with our purchase.

Here she is

prior to the Focus we had this, a 2010 Fiesta Zetec. We bought it new in 2010 then part exchanged it against the Focus. It was a cracking little car and we were sad to see it go. 60000 miles and it was always reliable.

Prior to the Fiesta we had a Citroen C2 1.1, it was a 2006 car and we got it in 2008, we only had it about 16months before trading it in for the Fiesta. Nice little car but very sluggish and just wasn't us. We put the vts spoiler, skirts and front splitters on to try and make it look a little better....

Before we got the C2 the wife, then girlfriend, had a 2002 Nissan Micra which she had before we met. We ran around in that for a little bit. At this point I was running around in various company vehicle as I was in car sales at the time...before that though I had this, a 2003 MG ZS 120, had a few little modifications some of which were done by me and some by the previous owner. Only had it 12months before selling it due to not using it with the company vehicles on hand.

More to follow...

Prior to the MG I had a Ford Cougar 2.5 V6, it was a bit of a disaster really, I was 19, nearly 20 and the insurance alone was a killer never mind the ridiculous running costs, well they were to me when I was so young and not earning a great deal. Then to top it all off the engine through a rod at 70mph, still don't know why, had plenty oil etc was well serviced but I think it was a wrong'un and I ignored all advice from friends and family not to buy it but of course I knew best. I'm sure many of us have been there and done similar... I don't have any pics of that car as it didn't last long really.

Prior to that I had this, my first car

The one on the left...

Now I know it won't be to everyone's taste but it was 10 year or more ago and max power and the likes were still very popular. I had always been into the 'max power' culture all the way through high school and all I wanted when it could drive was some thing like this.
I bought it bog standard in 2003, it's a 2001 fiesta 1300 8v but the way, and proceeded to spend every penny I earned on it, I loved it and I pampered it and polished it until I couldn't polish it any more, I took it to every car cruise in the North East and every car show that would have it. Like I say I know it's not to everyone's taste but the world would be a strange place if we all liked the same thing and I was and still am very proud of it.

Anyway, thanks for reading...

I like the Focus, looks smart with the appearance pack. Is it the 100 or 125?

We test drove a 125 prior to our baby being born in November, as a replacement for my wife's aging Ka. I thought it was very impressive, but ended up cutting the budget and the ecoboosts were out of range.

It's the 125 with the 6 speed 'box. Cracking thing to drive. They do look much smarter with the appearance pack.

Sounds like your situation is very similar to ours.

What did you go for in the end?

Great choice, that's what we would have gone for.

Well, our search became rather protracted, as my wife experienced significant back pain during pregnancy which massively reduced her mobility. Fortunately things have now improved, but she decided she wanted an auto. Had to rethink the budget, and decided that if we went for something considerably cheaper I could increase the budget for my next car, hopefully some time this year finances depending!

So we opted for a 2012 Ntec+ Note with CVT paperbag

But easy for my wife to access/drive with back pain, well equipped, comfortable, cheap and flexible with sliding rear bench. Plus it doesn't matter what state it gets in. The first car I have owned where drive throughs, sweets etc. are acceptable.

Best of luck for your imminent arrival. 11 weeks in I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of it bounce

I do like the new focus having had the last models, the interior is nice as well, quality much better than the Astra in my opinion.

I liked having a 3 door when my kids were small, they are 8 and 3 now, I like the fact on a 3 door there is no window or door for them to access, yes I know that you can use child locks etc. I had an 07 focus 3 door when mine were small, and when you pull the seat forward you get a good space to step in and be able to tighten up the car set straps from in front, not from the side like on a 5 door.

Saying that once they get bigger a 5 door is easier, but I would never discount a 3 door due to small children.

I do like how the Focus drives, certainly in Ecoboost form anyway, but we went for a V40 D2 R Design instead; my wife and I are also expecting our first child (due in 7 weeks so approaching squeaky bum time...)

I drove all of the usual suspects - Golf, A3, Focus, 1 series etc. - and preferred the V40 to them all. It's probably a bit of a left-field choice but the interior and overall build quality impressed me more than the rest of them.

Good luck with the new arrival, OP.

The Note, especially in Ntec+ form is nothing to be ashamed of, a relative of my wife had one from new and I was very impressed indeed. It was extremely comfortable and very well equipped and didn't seem to hang about. It was grey with the grey/black wheels and ltinted rear windows so looked quite 'sporty'.

As for the 3 door thing, my wife has developed a slight health issue which kinda ruled out the idea of a 3dr otherwise we may have been tempted to give the Fiesta a go with the baby. Also effecting her back...

V40... Nice choice, it was a little beyond our budget as we were at full stretch with the focus.

Getting very close, 7 weeks tomorrow for us. Just been to a labour class at the hospital today and it all seems very real now.

Cheers

I went from a Fiesta Titanium to a Focus Titanium, both great cars but the Focus stays with me as one of the best cars I've owned. A lot of people dislike the interior, I personally love it! It always felt like I was sliding into a spaceship cockpit, blue lights everywhere smile I also loved the way it came to life if you fancied a blast around a country road - the handling is really confidence-inspiring. Really fantastic cars.

The titanium has pretty incredible specification but going for the Zetec was a case of budget constraints vs needs/requirements...

I think the Zetec is the most suited to our needs.

Yea, I know it's no ST but it's still pretty impressive when I put my foot down in it and it sounds quite throughly.
