I do, until I realise late on a Saturday night I haven't got any beers to watch the football with on Sunday! 3.5% Heineken from the supermarket doesn't taste right!
Yup, that happened to me a few times...

While there's nothing wrong with not drinking, I have found that the people who don't touch booze at all are often some of the dullest people alive.

You'll find that pretty much all Northen European countries have a predilection to drinking to excess. That's just a natural response to spending 6 months of the year in cold, grey, wet, depressing weather.

Tbh I think it says more about your social circle than it does about the part of the country you live in.
Yes, agree to a certain extent.

Similar issue when individuals moan that their Facebook news feed is full of inane bks.

I enjoy a drink now and again, but in all honestly would not bother me if I never touched a drop again.

When you see these idiots, (male and female) causing trouble staggering around in town centres on a Friday and Saturday night, I think it's pathetic.

If the 'vast majority of the people you meet are obsessed with drinking', then the problem is you and the choices you make.

Tarring the entirety of British culture with your dodgy experience is, to say the least, limited and bizarre.
The people I've worked with that is. This is where most us meet our friends no?
Often, yes, but given your work seems to just have drunkards, you had better broaden your horizons.

I've found that a lot of people do not communicate much when sober!!
Seems to be a trait of people in regular employ or those without a job. Alcohol enables them.

Think about it...do you speak to the guy at number 7 or do you ignore him concerned that all the other neighbours will think you are strange.
Once natural reserve is combined with "not much to offer" or maybe a fear of being wrong, nobody sober speaks to anybodybiggrin

Move on to the accomplished professional, you can't shut the fXXXXkers up.
Not of course true, but the fear of speaking is not there, in many cases speaking is what they do all day, Doctors, lawyers etc.
The need for alcohol is that of a mild stimulant, a way to relax.

I'm not sure where my old Rugby club fits in to this analogy, I am probably full of cess

See what happens when you post sobersmile

As said before, it doesn't matter what area you're in, and with what 'classes' you work with it. Since I've been here, from aged 16 all I've heard is the same rubbish about drinking. Having spent 17 years here, I think it's safe to say I have a fair idea of how the UK works. Having gone back to Switzerland and France to family I can tell you that things over there are very different.
Why don't you live there then?
That. The French (for all their other faults) don't seem to have such a lad culture! I'm going to spend more time in Paris and Geneva this year. Actually I find my Aussie friends even worse - and they bored my tits off with their 'it was a WKD night' tales. Or get more 'middle class' friends.

Your mates are boring you and your not unique, it's got nothing to do with 'British culture'.

In my experience the drinking/laddish behaviour winds down as your mates grow older, get married, have kids and die a little inside.

Are your work mates younger than you? Are they married yet?

All I ever hear about are kids, bills, house prices, ukip, immigrants, work etc. Want to swap?

If you find yourself surrounded by people that you don't like mixing with, change your friendship circle.

Like hiking? Join an trekking/rambling group. Take up a new sport. Like peace and talking about the outdoors? Photography. Most big cities have these groups.

Plenty of low cost motorsport as well. Navigational Scatters, for example. And everyone will be sober...

Please! I'd love to talk about something else!

There is a mix of people ranging from mid twenties to late 50s. Most in their late twenties to mid thirties I have to say.

Careful what you wish for.

A move away from Sheffield may be all you need though, it is a northern student town well known for it's nightlife after all.

I'm the same age as you and work with people of a similar age range but I'm in Chelmsford (nightlife not so good here), maybe that's the difference?

I'm living in northern italy. Booze is cheap and up here in the mountains we have drunk hunters to contend with. Okay so its a bit rural but only 20 minutes from Portofino. They seem to be the only group to drink to excess despite there being a drink for every occasion.

Saying that Switzerland is far too expensive to live in nowadays
Not really, the wages seem relative. A friend lives in Zurich and has what is essentially an admin job, not management, he earns nearly £90k a year and his annual bonus would buy a very nice weekend car!

I hear where you are coming from, When I was at senior school the other kids hung out trying to get drunk on the weekend. When I went to collage the others always went to the pub or clubbing, then when I started work, and no matter where I have worked almost everyone wants to get drunk on the weekend.

There seems to be a lot of drinking, I see the city centre (in my case Birmingham) on a friday or saturday night and I feel embarresed at the state of some people who are 'having a good time' and then there is the need for the police, ambulance crews and bouncers who all have to sort this out.

Most people seem to meet new friends, girlfriends/boyfriends whilst out on the 'piss'.

It just seems to be the way of things.

BTW I am about the same age as you.

What do you do for a job?

As countless others have said, its your choice of probably three things, your location, your job, and the type of people you choose to mix with.

To suggest its the UK in its entirety that is the issue is totally idiotic. Try leaving Sheffield...
