Eurgh. GF is adamant she want some kind of SUV thing to replace current car, and dreams of an Evoque, which fills me with horror - as does the thought of a mong faced Quashkai (although I know the current model gets good reviews). I drove a Renault Kaptur at Christmas as a rental which she seemed to love, but it was the most revoltingly underpowered pile of junk I have ever experienced (with the eco mode turned on the accelerator basically just stops working). What are the least worst options I should consider? Open to second hand, doesn't have to be new. Not open to piles of expensive blinged out cack that go horribly wrong after 30,000 miles.

Mazda CX-5. Or forthcoming CX-3 (Captur size).

I find that 2wd cheapo SUVs are excellent for family duties.

Yeti or the Sorrento are the best looking at the lower end I think.

Just agree with whatever car choice she makes and buy that. It will make little difference to your life - apart from having a happy partner.

A couple of friends have bought the Kia Sportage which seems to be a reasonable piece of kit , we have a Audi Q7 with a V8 diesel in it which is pretty epic !!!

I generally hate SUVs but I have a real soft spot for the Skoda Yeti. That's where my money would go but most women can't get past the Skoda badge.

The new Jeep Renegade looks like a good small SUV.

I've driven most of the VWG ones and I'd go with a Yeti – get the 170PS diesel and it's not boringly slow either.

ETA: It's also capable of being thrown down a B road at a surprising pace for what it is!

been flicking through the various things suggested here. The Yeti is a seriously butt-ugly box - no?

now these I like. Interested by that grey import guy in the PH classifieds who seems to bring in JDM STI ones. Too good to be true? Bad idea in terms of insurance and servicing?

Don't forget that ignoring prejudices against stuff like Evoque's on looks, they'll probably do a lot better than a lot of other stuff if they ever do need to go offroad.

The Evoque is a fantastic car.

The Qashqai is also a good car. In fact, Nissan seem to be making some decent stuff recently.

Renault Captur or Qashqai or Juke. Stick with the diesel engines if you want any sort of sense of acceleration.

SIL had a 1.5DCI Qashqai, loved it. Bought a special edition Qashqai 1.6 petrol and hated it - totally dead, no power, etc, etc.

My father bought a Yeti 18 months ago and is not a fan.

Hard ride which makes my mother feel ill when in the passenger seat, no spare wheel unless you take the option of reducing boot space to fit one, problems with faulty brake discs which Skoda and the local dealer were entirely disinterested in resolving.

I quite like it for some of the reasons stated above - punchy performance for a diesel, not at all bad handling, but my father wished he had never sold his Mk2 CRV.

Get a long test drive before committing to the Skoda would be my advice as it might not suit everyone.
