So my car broke down on friday, assumed dead ingition coil.

Got it home, changed all 3 coils and all 3 spark plugs, which didn't do the trick. Still running rough with engine warning for cylinder 1 misfire.

Garage said it would be a burnt exhuast valve, until I told him I'd done a compression test and cylinder 1 had next to no compression.

Now he tells me that the engine is goosed and is going to be £££ to fix it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

What diagnosis has the garage done?

stretched timing chain and burnt out valves is extremely common on the 3 cyl 1.2 engine. not a cheap fix if your not handy with spanners and are paying for labour.

The garage have not yet seen the car but advised the coil and plug changes as it is apparently common for them to go and cause a misfire.

When this failed, I tried a compression test which showed cyl 2 and 3 were fine but cyl 1 had almost no compression. The mechanic said that there would still be compression in cyl 1 if the exhaust valve had burnt out.

The car is going to the mechanic on tuesday.

Should I be able to hear any noises if the chain had stretched? I The car ran perfectly beforehand with no unusual noises.

Thanks

Ah this is what I was afraid of.

I'll see what the garage say on tuesday and how much it will cost to fix, as changing the ignition coils is about as far as my spanner skills go laugh

Thanks for your help
