FYI OP the Saab parts business was sold off separately and is quite profitable by accounts, so no issue there.

Saab 95 / 93, Audi A6 or Volvo V70 would be my first research. Maybe a Lexus 250 (petrol) as it's a remarkable engine, though a smaller car.

Mondeo would give you the best bang for your buck. £5k will get a 6 year old, 80,000 mile example with a lot of toys on.

I had a focus which is similar to a mondeo in terms of interior,I love fords but it's not exactly the car I wanna drive people around in.i know the new skodas are really good, the volvos and saabs seem really good.
I'd prefer something that could carry five adults comfortably,I've been in Audi a4s that struggled with three kids in the back let alone adults and I've sat in newer E class mercs which seemed spacious,my focus was more spacious than an A4 so was just trying to correlate how much more spacious an a6 would be to an A4?or is there not really a car that will carry five adults out there?
I refuse to own a citreon Renault or Peugeot for the person that was asking, because they look awful, are built awful and the people tht drive them are all morons as they have no interest in cars which is the original reason someone would buy a citreon Picasso or Renault espastic.

So to conclude, you are really asking "What BMW or Audi can I buy for £5000?"

Merc E270 CDI or a Peugeot 407 coupe 2.7 HDI. Both are very nice to drive and have power when needed.

The A6 has a massive boot. But 3 adults in the back? It's not comfortable. Not sure about 2wd models, but the quattros have a transmission tunnel down the middle which reduces space for legs.

Either way, most saloons, the middle passing in the back is reduced to quite a bit of fiddling for seat belt. Most "exec saloons" are really for 4 adults in comfort.

The Citroen C6 is a very, very smooth ride, though the looks are an acquired taste - and your comments mostly make you look a bit of an espastic.

It was overpriced in the UK on launch, but it is a bit of a bargain used, if you can find one to a spec you like.

(I drive an A6)

comfortable + drives well are not always compatible, if by driving well you mean sporty.
Saab used to kind of fit that bill.
My old Saab 93 was very comfy. I bloody loved that car.

Mine too.

Though my 900 was even better - though a friend had the best seats in the world, ever - in a Saab 9000 Aero.

Going by the thread title and first post, a Volvo s60 and s80 are the obvious answer - far more space and comfort and with much better sound system than the German rivals, and at the same price you will get a younger and lower mileage car. But having read your subsequent comments you want us to suggest that you get 5 series or a6, so I suggest you get a 5 series or a6...

OP, I'm a little muddled as to what you want a vehicle to do.

Leaving aside your views about French cars for a moment, you seem pretty scathing about people who buy "Renault Espastics" (sic), but you want something that seats 5 adults in comfort. Yet you say you get your kicks with your track car. At some point- certainly at your price bracket- there's a trade off between something fun and spirited, and something that can seat 5 adults in comfort.

MPV's are cost effective for space/comfort... but you have to trade off a lot of driving fun and look a bit "old man".
BMW's/Lexus' will limit your 5th passenger's comfort with a rearward-bound transmission tunnel.

So I'm thinking you want something a bit fun, a bit spirited, FWD (so you have more room for that 5th passenger), Mondeo sized and shaped... is that correct?

In which case something Mondeo shaped and sized is... a Mondeo. There's a reason they're a fleet staple. Or whichever rival gives you the prestige/handling/comfort combination you like.

I'm interested in the volvos, skoda bmw merc Audi Saab, they all interest me,was just tht I only knew what the bmw and mercs were like,I do not want a French motor for the reason of their reliability and build quality, true or not,I don't wanna pay £300 for a headlight replacement like on the megane?

See a skoda superb 1 owner 2006 full leather sat nav heated front and rear, every option really for £4200! I guess if it could carry four adults in comfort that's good,I wasn't sure if saloons would carry five and was also part of my original question.

My C6 is one of the most technically interesting and unique cars around IMHO. To say that one who drives that has 'no interest in cars' says more about your rather narrow minded view of cars than about those that choose to drive unique and different vehicles.

I'd say a BMW or some other blandly designed Teutonic barge is the sort of thing driven by those who have no interest in cars, but are blinded by branding and brand perception rather than reality.

Certainly many PHers drive BMWs and Audis of various flavours but PH doesn't make up the majority of German car sales

Whilst I could take offence at the OP referring to me as a moron, I won't, as I have been known to do moronic things from time to time.

In my experience, choosing a French barge gives you the highest level of comfort and space available at its price point. If you want a comfortable car, why does buying French make you a moron?

The C6 is a flawed car. It is supported by the most incompetent main dealer network I have encountered. The boot is not very big. It has lots of German electrics that go wrong. On the positive side, it is very comfortable, very quiet, and a very easy way for a moron to get from A to B quickly with limited driving skills.

Of the barges I have travelled in, the closest rivals to the C6 in terms of comfort are the Jaguar XF and the Lexus GS300h. I had a lift in an old 5 series that seemed comfortable, but I was drunk at the time.

The Skoda Superb is a great car, according to many a Glaswegian taxi driver. It also has a huge boot. It's not particularly comfortable though.

How about a Laguna 3 ph2 sport tourer? Well speced and comfy. Imo more interesting and much better value than a 3x touring.

Don't know if you would get 3 adults in the back though. 2 no problem. Huge boot. Whats not to like?

... Oh yeah.
