After the other half decided to get pregnant and ruin my car plans for the future I thought i'd use the opportunity to get myself a 4WD and not feel completely pointless doing so... I went to the showroom and they had a Q7 Sport Edition, nice looking etc but pretty damned expensive. I know theres a new model coming out in 6 months or so, so I figured might be a good time to get a PCP on the current one. I know I need to sit down and talk to the dealer but I chatted to a guy recently who'd bought a 54k one for 45 using some finance incentive and dealer discount. So actually didn't seem too bad.

It's a 245tdi 3.0 engine so I suppose my q is....

Does anyone know if it can average 35mpg or so (doubt it, it's huge)
Anyone bought one recently and got a good price?

Thanks in advance....

We've just bought a new SLine plus, not sure about the MPG yet, £10K deposit and £415 per month.

We've run the 225 version of the 3.0d since 2010 and get 29mpg around town, often see 36mpg on long motorway runs but more usual 33mpg I would say

How so? Are you expecting quintuplets, or planning to take the sprog green-laning?

Babies start small and get bigger (*citation needed), and they are remarkably unimpressed by expensive cars. Buggies fold up small, and you won't need to be carting bikes etc around for a few years. NOW is the time to get something just *slightly* practical (a back seat and a boot - RS3 sportback, perhaps?) and upgrade to an S4 or S6 when and if your family grows.

Make sure you get a leather interior, though.

All good points, i liked the look of the Q7 though and never had a pointlessly huge car. I'll go look at another one and see how that goes...

Yeah, late 8 speed will nudge into the low/mid 30s on a smooth run but don't expect to average 35 with mixed driving.

For the size and weight I'd say 35 is pretty good for a motorway stint.

Expect low 20s urban.

Was going to say very similar. I know a few people who have had 1 child and gone out and purchased a people carrier, thinking they need all the space.
I've had 2 kids and the biggest car I had was an Octavia Vrs, loads of room for everything.

Wait until she gets pregnant for the 3rd time wink

The smaller the child, the more crap they have to have carted around with them - I speak from experience - I have an 11 year old, a 4 year old and a 6 month old.

I've never even been in a Q7, but I remember reading they were an inverse tardis - huge on the outside, small inside - but then again, I don't think parents buy huge SUVs for the interior space, it's more about feeling their family is protected.

We don't have an SUV, but I am thinking about getting one now we do need plenty of space.

Miles per tyre is probably almost as significant.... wink

My nieghbour had one, whether it was the car, his driving style or lack of care, but he got through a lot of tyres.

The q7 is legendary for tyre consumption. The new model is 350kg lighter which translates into 9mpg improvement. close to 40mpg on a run from 272hp 3.0D

I currently own a 2012 model and it is my second Q7. The car is a pleasure to drive but as mentioned will chew the tyres lucky to get 8k depending on your driving style. The only other issue I have discovered is that they are terrible on ice with the car unable to get traction with full lock the car will slide forward. Winter tyres are a must for this car and I recommend you seriously consider fitting them the difference is tremendous. I intend to go for an upgrade late in the year Audi do a great lease hire deal.

I totally agree with Silentbrown.

I have never understood why people think they need a massive car to cart around a baby. I have two boys, now 17 & 15, but back when the youngest was a baby and the eldest a toddler I had an E30 M3 and the wife had an E46 M3. Did we ever have a problem putting all the baby bits in the respective 2 door cars....no, we didn't. You do not need something so big. Save yourself some money as the Q7's are quite expensive and get something that is a) more practical and easier to park, b)cheaper and c) something a little more fun to drive than a barge!

It's easier as they get bigger, but the pram and carrycot thing that mounts on it entirely fills the boot of my daughter's VW Golf. My other daughter has a Honda Jazz and when she comes over for the day she's even using the front seat to carry stuff (and we have most big things replicated here) and Jazz is legendary for how much interior space it has.

OK, you manage with what you've got but it's massively easier to just be able to chuck things in without thinking about it.

I bought an S8 to cart sprog about smile it does the job for holiday duties and yes it's a big footprint. Bugaboo will dismantle to go at the back of the boot and cases etc fit fine in the back. I've been known to stick a roof box on it though....

My wife had an old A6 Avant and that was also fine, although the boot space wasn't as usable as you'd think. Now that we don't need to cart travel cots, pushchair, high chair etc whenever we go away for a weekend we've downsized to an S5 Sportback which is absolutely fine with 1 sprog. Space in the back for my wife to keep him entertained on longer runs.

If you want the truck look but less of the built in grief I'd be surprised if a Q5 (or SQ5) weren't almost as spacious, barring the obvious lack of 3 rows of seats.

Or just buy an S4/6 or whatever you fancy - roof box once or twice a year isn't the end of the world smile

Hmmm

Don't think I want one anymore. I do fancy an S3/RS3, but my current car is an M135i so I wonder whether they're both a bit similar.

Thanks for the replies everyone...
