Hi, I have a 2009 Audi A4 Quattro S-line 2.0T Petrol and I noticed that its burning oil big time. I've taken a note of the mileage and the amount of oil I've been putting in and I've work out that its roughly 1 litre per 750 miles. The car has done 75K miles and it appears to be using more and more oil. I have Googled the problem and read some horror stories about the 2 litre petrol engine burning vast amounts of oil but 1 litre every 750 miles is not good news surely?

Anyone got any advice or should I just punt the car on?

Cheers.

Have a read of this.

http://www.pistonheads.com/GASSING/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I had a happy ending as audi paid for most of the repairs and the garage we bought the car from paid the rest.
Car is sorted now.

A 2009 car is getting on a bit, audi might still help with the repairs, so worth asking.

good luck.

I've read a number of posts now and I think I'll just need to sell it on. I have dealt with dealers before and there is no way I have the will power to fight it out with them. Shame as its the best car I have ever owned but I think its time to say bye bye Audi frown

You've nothing to lose by giving them a call - You might be surprised. Let us know what they say....

I've heard a rumour (from more than one place) that Audi are very, very quietly putting a hand up on this one now.

If you really can't be bothered go and throw it at we buy any car but it's certainly worth a call to your dealer.

I've seen evidence of that, too.

Call them, get the consumption test done, then ask what they propose to do about it - no 5 year old car should need an engine rebuild.

This specific problem was featured recently on radio 4's consumer show You and Yours, worth a listen.

we had one on the company books that went back to Audi twice for fettling.

would come back and use 1 litre = 750 miles , but gradually get down to 1 litre every 350 miles.

Audi claimed that 750 miles / litre was within tolerance!!

Finally sold it on to the owner of the mechanic's garage next door, who I had discussed the matter with previously.

Who then proceeded to moan incessantly about the oil usage rolleyes

I keep meaning to link to this excellent video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRv2jg1xZoM

Shows very clearly what's involved in sorting the problem for many cars - and doing this job in 12.5 hours is pretty awesome...

Anyhoo, time to call my dealer. My car is now also at the point where the oil consumption isn't funny: It's gone from 1L/2500 miles to 1L/700 miles over the last 6 months.

Booked in for oil consumption test, which is F.O.C "courtesy of Audi". Seems a promising start...

Ask them to borescope it because if any of the cylinder walls are scratched, you (or Audi) will be looking at a new short engine.

Understood. But at this point I think it's about proving that there's a problem, so I'll let things take their natural course...

Is reboring the cylinders to (say) +20 thou and fitting oversize pistons and/or rings not viable these days?

With high dealer labour charges I'd imagine it's cheaper to supply a short engine.

Yeah cool, let them do their tests. The thing is though, they might just drive around slowly and therefore not be able to recreate the problem. Oil consumption can vary a lot depending on engine load, revs and over-run, so I'd be interested to know how they conduct the test!

As already said, VAG won't do that. It's cheaper and quicker for them to replace the engine. That will also ensure the latest revision of pistons / rings / rods are fitted, instead of having to get oversize ones from Mahle.

Audi will hand the owner back the car after setting the oil level and sealing the filler.

They'll ask you to come back at 621 miles exactly so they can measure the amount required to refill.

That's quite a specific distance to request a customer to achieve.

However, it's an interesting challenge smile If I can turn up with exactly 621.3 on the odometer, do I win a coconut?

(...and it's made more difficult because the dealer is around an hours drive away!)

Do they seal the dipstick hole (if fitted) and the sump plug as well, otherwise the test could be rigged in the customer's favour very easily?
