So why is that an issue if it's worth the asking price? (other than putting off potential buyers...)

Was one of these not in Cannonball run movies albeit in black?
I thought that was a Mitsubishi Colt...

Although on closer inspection it seems to have been a Starion.

Can't remember a Starion being in the film but can remember a Black 4wd Subaru with black wheels that Jackie Chan drove.

They weren't that well regarded at the time, just another Jap coupe, people were not quite so fixated on RWD then because quite a lot of stuff still was, I think Celicas were more desirable to more people and this competed with the Nissan Sunny ZX Coupe which was similar in looks but FWD and a bit forgettable.

Surprised so many survived as they didn't seem like one people kept as a classic and I don't remember them being that numerous even then, have a lot been imported from Japan since ?

The owner is dreaming if he thinks that car is worth 11k. Anyone who pays 11k for it is a total dreamer. Thats a solid 6k car (depending on closer inspection).

Rule of thumb generally when buying cars - if the owner claims its mint it isn't by a long shot. All Corollas come with rust, they installed it from factory!

Open up the TVIS at 4k and rev her all the way to 7600rpm! Was a ground breaking engine at the time. Tsuchiya still believes its the best handling chassis ever built.

Big fanbase in Japan due to the Anime series Initial D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfXHiydW16E. Drift king!

EDIT: changed it to the first episode instead of the very last, in case anyone actually wants to watch the whole series!!

In all my years as a certified petrol head, I have never heard of this car. I love the anime and can see why it's become a part of Japanese youth culture. Is this the ulimate sleeper? It really does look like an old Toyota that someone got a black bonnet for from the breakers! I like it for some reason though. I'd love a drive in one, especially around the mountains of Japan.

Thanks for sharing, thats being filed away for future reference.
No problem, just thought any fans or jdm enthusiasts who were planning a trip would like to know, esp as it's close to tokyo and not that pricey. Plus the guy who runs the place is really really cool and deserves more business!

I would agree with that except it was actually better than the Escorts, I drove one that came in PX and it was great fun, was weird as all other Corollas were FWD by then, engine was a revelation after Pintos.

I bet it was!
The original 4AGE is a bit of a beast for an eighties 1.6. Without valve lift they rev to nearly 8000rpm, and love boost. The better B16A came along a few years later, but it was a great engine for it's time.

I think the AE86 was liked for drifting in the nineties, because they were one of the only cheap and light front engined RWD cars available in Japan. Later the better Silvia and 200SX turbos became cheap enough to drift.
The AE86 has a cult following because of 'Best Motoring', 'Hot Version' and 'Initial D'. There's even a live action movie that's not awful.

For £11K you could get a far better car, but then that's not really the point. If that's a fair price you will own something that drifting fans will drool over, and it will probably cost you relatively little to own. It's a rolling investment, and a small piece of car culture history. I've just looked up prices for AE86 cars, and I can't believe how much they are.

Usually, in group tests of the time in the mags, the Manta GTE was picked ahead of these ( or the UK version of these at least ) which seems surprising now

Just had a look and C155 END, a black one I remember, looks like it died in 2006.....or went to Ireland.

Someone I know still has a white one in great nick - as said already, you either 'get them' or you don't

One last contribution to show the awesomeness of this car or why it is "special"

enjoy these vids!

Also i know there is an official vid thread, but these are 86 vids so lets allow me to make an exception seeing as we are on a specific topic.

This last one has major spoilers from initial D so don't watch if you intend on watching in the future or haven't already seen it!

...it is cool because it is in a cartoon... oh this has to be a strong contender for nerd-like man logic. I bet the car park at Comi-con is filled with junk like this, driven by middle aged men who bounce between conventions dressed as a character from Star Trek or their favourite Manga hero. wink

As for the current owner, he obviously hasn't felt the bitter sting of the petrolhead formula:

Money put into old banger does not equate to increase in value.

"You Know You Want To"... nope, I certainly know I don't.
