OK, i know this is an open ended question and there is a huge price difference between models but what did you negotiate when buying an approved used or new car?

I am browsing the market for an approved used V8 vantage and was wondering what others may have negotiated with Stratstone?

Extended warranty, servicing, price? Anything at all.

How was your negotiating experience? Did you get what you want?

Strats. MY11 V8 Vantage SS

negatives:
No discount on price

positives:
Cracking trade in price
Front paint protection film
Full glass buttons
Transfer of my 'Plus' warranty from my old car to the new one and upgrade it to Premium to give two years premium warranty
Swap of all my Wheels/carbon from the old car to the new one
Clutch warranty (miles/months of purchase)
Lend of a Vanq for a day

Very happy, didn't need to play hardball or silly games. The deal didn't make either party cry. All in all a very positive experience.
I'd go back.

Not Stratstones for me but I went in knowing what my current car was worth, plus the new one, then decided on a firm maximum price in my mind on what I'd pay to change.

I mentioned this to the dealer and asked him for his best number. If it matched mine or was below I'd buy it, if not I wouldn't. He came back with less than what I would have paid. Bought car.

'New' car was only eight months old and didn't need anything doing to it at all. Didn't feel I needed to negotiate anything else.

On my used DB9 I got.......

Maintenance charger
Brolly
Clear rear lamps and high level brakelight fitted FOC, (but not supplied)

Unfortunately, they stated the car would be serviced before collection but it was not. I asked numerous times for the service check sheet and book to be stamped to no avail so now I service it myself according the the AM schedule as I cannot trust the dealers to do it.

The high level brakelight subsequently fell out a couple of months later. I then fixed that myself too.

Interesting replies guys! Thanks.

I have no part exchange so I do want a good deal. But, they didn't give the impression there would be movement on price.

When the time comes I will push hard. If you don't ask you don't get.

Bought a 4.7 V8 Vantage 08 from AM Works.

Negative:
No discount
No car cover (see below!)

Positive:
Car cover (see above!)
Works after sales has been excellent.

To be fair, I wasn't really in a position to barter as I actually bought the car on my mobile stood on a airbase in Afghanistan.
Asked for discount but didn't get. Managed to get a indoor car cover but forgot all about it when picking it up! But, when it went back for some minor faults and I returned back to work for a few months they kept it at Works until I got back and also put set new tyres on for me.

Whatever people get, I would say now to February is the best time to negotiate and buy. Plus you have spring and summer coming up to use it properly.

As already written, do your research and work out what you will pay, stick to that and you will get the good deal that you want.

I know someone who got the Aston teddy bear thrown in. Not sure if that was a factor in the purchase. Probably was knowing him...

It is usually possibly to obtain a better deal towards the end of a month. So, aim for this, end of the quarter and end of the companies financial year. The last one is easily found with a internet search.

I agree that February is a good month for buying any car plus with the plate change in March deals should be available.

On a new car I got.

10K off price
Graphite Inserts on alloys
Umbrella
Indoor Car Cover
Gap Insurance
Alloy and Tyre Insurance
Free car wash once a month.
Factory Tour

The insurance may well not be "free" and the car wash is a nice tactic to keep you in touch with the dealer for onwards sales. It's a nice touch though. I went on the weekend and quite a few people were there doing the same thing.

Stratstones V8 Vantage 2007 Plate.

Negative:
No discount would not budge an inch on the price, even though I was paying cash, so to speak. They even tried to get me to buy the car on finance!!
NO EXTRAS OR EVEN A HINT OF ANYTHING ELSE!

Positive:
Full tank of fuel, which I had to insist on!!
They paid for my train travel to the nearest station.

Never use them again!!

Negotiate your deal and if you're happy proceed.

However for any extra items thrown in FoC, insist they are listed on the invoice at £0 before you sign. Eg Full Day at Millbrook £0, or half day at Millbrook, 1st service, umbrella etc etc. Then there can be no argument about he said / she said, or non binding emails, or no recollection of that matter when the sales person churns on to the next brand.

If they throw in various insurance policies to meet an add on policy penetration target such as GAP, wheel tyre policy, dent protection blah blah, fully understand what the policy offers (and how it operates) and if you don't need it, cancel it on day of pickup and get some of the premium back as cash. A large dealer used to offer tyre protection through kwik fit. Great, but Kwik fit were unable to order the specific manufacture reccomended tyres thereby rendering the policy useless.

Any paint protection stuff is in my view worth £0, and some dealers don't apply it, just leaving a product bag in the car. I have yet to meet a dealer's 'valet' person that can wash a car properly, let alone apply a sealant system without grinding in more swirls than in a raspberry ripple.

Some of the add ins you may want to ask for are:
Umbrella and boot holder (if not fitted)
Trickle charger (some vehicles had them as standard)
12 month road tax from day of collection, not month prior as dealers can do 12 months and a few weeks
12 month mot if applicable
Extended warranty
Full day Millbrook
1/2 day Millbrook
Next service
Hunter laser alignment to factory specs to include before and after print outs of car status
Full tank of fuel, to be 98 or 99 if it's a new v12 with knock sensors or if it's a v8, with receipt showing 98/99
Gap, tyre, wheel, dent insurance
Sat nav map update to current year
All recalls / campaigns done (you will need to list them, sad but true, should be no cost anyway)
Any tsb's you want doing eg headlamp silica gel packs (again you will need to list, no cost)

Select one of the following:
1. You did well
2. You have done well

Unless you're a football manager ("the boy done good" etc), in which case, as you were.

My dealer listed at one price, then strangely dropped that within a few days, by £2,000.

I negotiated £1,500 off, but was not really bothered about discount, because I knew it was the exact specification that I wanted. Think I might have 'forgotten' to mention that to the salesman. smile
I have since discovered only one other.

Sufficient for me, was the 'as new' condition and best treat, £44,000 off the cost to the original owner.

My advice is find the best condition car you can in the spec that you want, and don't expect too much by way of discount. As an owner you will then be proud of your car, so don't spoil that for an extra few percent.

We all like a discount, but looking at the total value of stock on the forecourts, considerable overheads and many days going by without selling a car, it is probably not an easy way to make 'big' money.

Good luck with your search.
