AMDB9 hard to believe you are that much of a driving dynamics simpleton & yet can be an expert in something as seemingly complex as Pharmaceuticals! ... 1500kg+ car moving at speed & with sideways momentum puts one rear wheel on low friction surface (grass) spins round & you generalise that's somehow the cars fault Jesus.....

Pure & simple the driver made an error in a powerful car, happens all the time when people push it. An organisational shame that appropriate public protection was not in place to stop the car making its way into the watching crowd to cater for just such an eventuality.

WTF! First Paul Walker gets killed in a Porsche and now Paul Bailey has nearly killed himself and a few others in the process - are Porka's really that unsafe? Both people who crashed these car's are pretty good drivers from the sounds of it - seems to me that it's the car's safety dynamics at fault and unable to keep up with the car's power!? Shocking!
Jesus Christ, do you write for the Daily Mail?!?!

There are lots of 918s and Carrera GTs that haven't been crashed. Lots.

Walker's crash was caused by one thing and one thing only - Rodas was driving like a c**t. 90-100mph in a 30 zone.

Paul Bailey's crash was as flemke described, just an unlucky set of events meaning he lost control. The organisers and their lack of proper safety protocols are to blame for the injuries to spectators.
I don't think he said anything that unreasonable tbh...

Making cars with this immense amount of torque to the rear wheels in a road car must be matched with lightening fast electronic aids (or an F1 driver!) It looks to me that as soon as the rear wheel touched the grass the car went out of control.

I do hope everyone involved is ok & you're absolutely right, the safety at that event looks questionable at best...

I wonder if the traction control was turned off to add a bit more to the experience?

This has been my thought exactly since I first saw the vid Bruce. I don't own a 918 but I've had a couple of "saves" in other cars via the magic gaurdians and they are very effective. Doesn't mean it can get you out of all problems of course but a single wheel spinning should be in the remit.

I can't think of any reason to turn the computers off though, I'd imagine the spectators wouldn't have noticed any difference on a fast drive by like that.

:-) slate me all you like it was kind of expected anyway as it seem PH norm off late. It's my view though agree or not...both these cars were Porsche flagship models and seemingly lost control by drivers who have access to pretty fast cars. Paul has multiple videos on youtube of his antics in track day events etc and Rodas history was clear to everyone anyway! Strange coincidence anyway you look at it.

What may seem even more Daily Mail like to some - this morning on the way to work it was pissing down cats and dogs and I saw a black 991 Turbo S sideways with two of it's wheels up in the air and ambulances and police everywhere! Wonder what on earth happened there! It seems to me the car aquaplaned and lost control over static water. What's even more Daily Mail is that I am thinking of trading in my Maserati GTS for one!

spectators only get a sense of styling and noise at these events. Switching off computers is solely for the driver's pleasure

Big fat low profile tyres and standing water are not a good combination for any car & driver!

What you need, to avoid these spins when a wheel touches the grass, is an F1 driver with his lightning fast reflexes.

Oh, wait ...

Maybe wait for the evidence and enquiry before speculating about how the accident occurred. Keyboard Warriors coming up with theories about driving ability, grass, brake failure, etc etc only adds to the crap that's circulating out there. As a member of the Supercar Drivers Club as Paul is, we simply pray Paul and those affected by this directly and those at the event who watched or assisted are ok and can get through this traumatic experience in one piece, both mentally and physically.

I'd imagine that the surface was very dusty given the country it's in and the fact that it wasn't a road.....start going sideways on that and computer or not you'd have very little grip.

Thanks for posting. He's a genuine guy with a deep passion for cars, enjoys sharing his passion and yes receiving lots of attention - as do 99.9% of owners, small or big. I can only imagine the depth of his sadness and misery at what happened and it wouldn't surprise me if Mr Bailey personally looks after those critically injured in the years to come. It's a living nightmare.

The organisers are to blame: the spectators assumed there was the necessary safety margin, the organisers must have assumed Mr Bailey could handle his cars and Mr Bailey must have assumed the organisers had built in the required safety provision. A tragic accident waiting to happen.

Not the same but I went to the Bedford Autodrome a few weeks back with my kids (in their twenties). For the entire day we were pushed harder by the (excellent) instructors than I ever thought possible. It was extreme. But you could see everywhere there was a huge emphasis on safety. Cars completely separated from humans and buildings.

I sincerely hope all make a complete recovery, that Mr Bailey retains his passion and his willingness to share it, and that all amateur organisers learn from Malta.
