What are the current cheapest options for OE/OEM parts?

Best I can find is oceanbreeze (Ocean Plymouth dealer) on ebay-

Front discs £379-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-BMW-Front-Brake-...

Rear discs £219-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-BMW-Rear-Brake-D...

Can't find the same price for the quality anywhere (carparts4less, ecp, bmminiparts, allgermanparts, c3bmw etc.)

I think I have a slightly sticky front caliper but they're harder to come by. Pagid ones are out of stock on cp4l and ecp but are a reasonable ~£130, how soon it would be to get them in stock I don't know.

Also found these-

http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/product/product?pa...

I hadn't heard of Delco Remy before, are they decent or to be avoided?

Mister-Auto currently have E39 M5 ATE discs for 200 quid each, but with the code 'BRAKE15' you'll get 15% off taking the total down to £340 with free shipping. They don't have the rears at the mo though.

That's a decent saving!

Shopping around, if I go for those discs you mentioned, ocean plymouth for the rear discs and pads/sensors from carparts4less I can get the overall parts cost down to ~£650. That's not too shabby I'd say! Who says these were expensive to run. hehe

You can get caliper rebuild kits for the E39 M5 for £32 per caliper here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-5-SERIES-M5-E34-E39-...

The kits include all seals & boots as well as the piston. The kits are made by Budweg (Denmark). Used them on my front calipers with great success. If you're getting a garage to do the work there's the additional labour cost to strip and rebuild but its pretty simple work. Be worth replacing the slide pins and the bleed nipple too while you're at it. Although not strictly necessary, while the calipers were off the vehicle I had the outside of them media blasted then painted with VHT paint.

Cheapest rotors I've come across have been from BMW Ocean Plymouth, although ATE ones are available elsewhere for a little less as someone else has indicated.

How much effort/time would it be to rebuild the caliper? It'd be the mechanic doing it and not me so as long as it's still cost effective going off a new caliper price of £130.

Stripping & a basic clean, then re-building a caliper is pretty quick esp if you're fitting a new piston rather than have to clean crud off the old piston and refit it. The only bugbear will be if the bleed nipple is seized. If the bleed nipple comes out easily then it should be no more than 30 mins per side to strip & rebuild. Cost-effectiveness of a garage rebuild depends a lot on the hourly rate charged.

Once rebuilt it takes the same time to fit/bleed the rebuilt caliper as the "new" one, of course. (The "new" ones from ECP/CPFL will be professionally re-manufactured & media blasted units, and there'll be a refundable core charge for your old calipers)

Need to be sure that your spannerman is happy to do this because not many garages rebuild calipers anymore - just drop in "new" ones, whereas back in the day re-building was commonplace. Getting hold of rebuild kits can be difficult too.

If the garage are to rebuild the calipers it would be worth getting some stainless steel bleed nipples (a few pounds) as well but make sure you get the correct size. There are several SS bleed nipple manufacturers, I used ones made by HEL.

Yeah I'll have to speak to the mechanic and see what he's happy doing. Don't suppose you have a link to the correct bleed nipples?

From memory, I phoned the eBay Brake Parts shop and asked for the correct dimensions since they didn't list them on their eBay site.

Also contacted Bigg Red http://www.biggred.co.uk/index.php and consulted them too.

Eventually bought them from HEL direct:

http://www.brake-lines.co.uk/hel-bleed-nipple.html

...but can't recall which size. Sorry, not very helpful!

A bit of phoning round should get you the correct option.

Bleed nipple size M10 x 1.0mm on Realoem part #5: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DE92...

Also, they need to be the right length. There's about 4 different lengths and the ones I bought ones were not the standard length ones for sale as listed in the Hel on-line shop. After speaking to someone there I was supplied with a different one. Just can't remember the exact length...Sorry!

£260 for the pair.

Doesn't matter where you buy them, only one company makes them.

Rear discs
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-M5-E39-4-9-5-1999-9-...

Much cheaper, I figured they're going on the rear and Apec isn't exactly a no name so worth it.

Had dealings with Ocean when sourcing braked for my M3. Absolute pleasure to deal with, very helpful and a great price. Highly recommend.

We sell Delco Remy alternators and starter motors. Never had a problem with them. Many of the components they sell are sourced from other manufacturers like ADL Blueprint, BOSCH etc so you can be assured of a quality product.

Because they aren't ripping you off biggrin
I suspect the recent plunge of the euro value may have something to do with it.

Also, go on BMWForums.info and post a thread asking Harry Fairburn for a price (BMW Dealer in Scotland).

They quoted me £240 for E46 M3 front discs inc VAT and delivery when the cheapest I could find elsewhere was £329 (eBay)...
