As a drinker in most pubs nowadays. I get told of for moaning about these things too much, but it's the little things really... Where has bench seating gone? Why must I sit on an uncomfortable chair table combo? Ditto stools are dissapearing. There is almost nowhere to put your drink nowadays, ledges round pillars are a thing of the past, and pool tables as well. Before anyone says go to a 'real' pub, all these things could be reincorporated for minimal cost. I appreciate the chain pubs are sterile but for lots of reasons are busy. Just as an aside, a new spoons has opened up in an area where lots of old boys used to drink, yet it is totally unwelcoming for them. Why not have a small lounge room for regular drinkers who aren't interested in food? Are these customers unimportant.

Yes. Because they have a shorter shelf life than the beer the spoon of doom sells.

I didn't mean literally old men, I mean regular traditional working class (usually) men from 40 onwards who would drink say 3-4 nights a week, cumulatively that's a lot of business, why do the pub chains shun them and increasingly make them feel they are in a restaurant?.

Because the margins on food are so much closer better than those on drink, it encourages the "lunchtime crowd" and evening diners who pay silly money for stupidly named grub and keeps the working class pint drinkers out of the 30p a pint profit they make in favour of cocktail and wine margins...

Sad but true.

Our chain pub local has recently got a pool table, would have been more accurate to call it a w@nker magnet, the sooner it goes the better.

Don't people generally drink less as they get older certainly in pubs?

This I think.

However some pubs are struggling to the extent that Sunday 'carvery' is offered at pretty much near to cost. My local certainly is.

Alas it's unfortunately the one thing it does well.

I'm all for bench seating but bar stools are a pet hate of mine. Nowt worse than having the full length of the bar taken up with a line of miserable blokes with a single narrow gap for everyone else to elbow into in order to get a drink!

Majority of the pubs near me now do food, but like most pubs these days they don't seem to get that busy. A new pub has opened, concentrating on real ale, with stools and ledges all the way around. The only food you can get is crisps and pork scratchings, and there's no music. The place is absoultely packed every weekend. There's definitely a market for old school pubs again.

I'm impressed if your local has managed to find chairs that are less comfortable than benches, I thought only the rail companies had managed that one.

I still don't understand why w'spoons doesn't seem to have enough seating for drinkers or places to put your pint, after all they sell a shed load of ales. I thought the police favoured sit down drinking instead of standing?.

They don't really care what the Police favour. If you're stood up, with no where to rest your drink you drink it more quickly.
