The remote off my car was getting a bit worn so bought another genuine one off eBay for £20 and got a tracking number that it was sent. Yesterday an envelope turned up signed for and when I opened it, it was empty and didn't look like it had been tampered with.

I messaged the eBay seller who keep saying it was definitely in the envelope when he posted it and how straight a seller he is. I've told him that the envelope was empty and I even went the the post office with my existing fob and ask if it would cost £1.44 to send it signed for and they said it would without doubt cost more than that.

So i'm left with an empty signed for envelope, no key and £20 down. The envelope was just a flimsy paper one so i'm surprised he sent it in such poor packaging.

The seller keeps saying how the post office confirmed the key was in the envelope and it was definitely sent.

A few people have told me to go to the police but i'm not sure they would care or be interested and since the key is not paired with my car it wouldn't even open the door let alone start it if some scumbag in my sorting office has pinched it.

This is surely the responsibility of the seller to get in touch with Royal Mail.

I did, but he seems to think because he sent it signed for and tracked it proves he sent it.

Raise a dispute - when you mention the postage weight/cost issue they will side in your favour

An empty envelope wouldn't cost that much to send though? So there must have been something in it?

You'd think so, wouldn't you? An empty flimsy envelope would be 62p wouldn't it?

What was the value of thepostage? it would have had to go as a large letter+ signed for so if the stamps or lable is to the value for a std letter it would prove it was sent empty as the fob would have meant the postage would have been more expensive due to the depth of the item. Weigh your own and use the postage calculator on the Royal Mail website to prove your point to PAYPAL.

I'd have thought so. And you wouldn't need anything bigger than the smallest of envelopes to post a key.

Was the envelope sent recorded delivery? Doubt it for the postage paid. Have you checked the tracking number is legit on the Royal Mail website. He should have a copy of the post office receipt with the tracking number on it -ask for a copy

Tracking number is legit as it's my signature.

It was sent signed for at £1.44 which I thought was cheap considering the key fob is thick and has a bit of weight.

But, £1.44 would be very expensive for an empty flimsy paper envelope, wouldn't it?

If you raise a dispute with Ebay/Paypal you will win - buyers are always favoured in these situations.
Sellers are told to use a "trackable service" which RM Signed for is not. Becuase of the method of postage you will win the dispute.

According to Royal Mail a 1st class tracked and signed for letter is £1.72. A 2nd class letter is £1.63.

That covers up to 100g.

Here are the current Royal Mail prices. It tends to be a bit less (AFAIK about 80% of the standard cost) if you frank your own mail.

Also they go on size and thickness as well as weight now, so anything "DVD case thickness" or so is a large letter, even if it's small in size like a key fob.

eh? what about the 'signed for' bit on the receiving end and the receipt issued with the tracking reference on when payment is made ......

A) you're not allowed to open the letter before you sign for it
B) the OP probably wasn't expecting the envelope to allegedly contain a key fob and would have had no idea what to suspect was in the envelope.

Just raise a dispute with ebay, they'll side with you as you didn't get the item.
