Hi all
Anyone painted a 7 going from red to white and have they had any problems with the new colour being affected by the old?

Yes.. My car was red untill last winter when Tony at TSK (factory outsourced paint shop, and very good he is too)
painted my car Caterham white...

basicly had to take most of the paint off before starting again.
Its only been on the road for last summe so not too many chips yet..

There is only one person to paiont your Seven. TSK. 01322 441604. Speak to Tony. They paint all the factory cars and know how to do it properly. They are also very reasonably priced.

Standard procedure painting any car would be to sand the original paint off, apply new primer and paint. If it's been done properly you shouldn't have any problems at all.

You've obviously not been in many bodyshops. Changing a cars colour does not require bare metal prior to reapplication of a new colour.

TSK is not the only place to paint a 7. It normally looks great when done by TSK but I've never found it stays on the car very long. one of the major requirements of paint in my eyes.

Would you not sand down to the primer at least?

No you're right, but I have repainted several guitars (same paint as a car) and Ill always sand down to the primer before repainting.

If you use a bar coat or a sealer the red wont bleed through into the white. Depending on the paint system you might get a away with using a clear 2k laquer for this or at least i seem to remember this being the case when I was in the trade in previous life.

Most body shops would spot repair and prime the repaired area, then flat and or scotchbrite the whole surface before degreasing and painting. You'd prime the whole lot if there was many repairs close together. Sevens require etch priming of any bare metal bits due to the ali panels.

Had 3 cars painted by them and the finish when the car arrived was great mirror like finish but the paint pealed off after a very short time and almost to minor touches round the edges leaving the etch primer in some places and bare alli in others. as well as stone chipping causing more damage than you'd expect and spreading further than just the chip.
i've seen other cars with the same issues too.
I've never had the same problems when the cars have been painted at 2 of my local paint shops I put all the problems down to lack of prep and not enough time spent during the painting process to key the surfaces together.

My first Catetham was painted in McLaren Orange by TSK. Great finish but paint seemed soft and would easily chip. Under the sills and side panel under rear wings were really bad and this was never used in the winter.

Second Caterham painted locally finish not as good but acceptable, had very few chips and sills were fine, under rear wings had one or two chips.
