Proof that drinking beer with your friends can result in good decisions - I bought my chums E39 525i Msport off him last weekend and its being delivered today!

I have already ordered the Failed ABS ECU from Bosch, and will investigate the wiring for the intermittent airbag fault in due course.

it will look like this:-

Lets hope its more reliable than my diseasal E60 525d

I've had lots of E39's and they are superb cars. What wheels are they ? M-Parrallel reps ? Staggered 19's ? Are the M5 Mirrors folding ? Nice thing that, well done.

Everything about the car is from factory options, so the wheels are staggered M-Wheels, with polished outers all standard OEM options I believe.

Think mine are 18's ?

I know you will think me pedantic, I don't mean to be.

I own an e39 530 Sport myself & the model nomination M Sport only came about on the later e60, it is an e39 Sport.

As mine does, it may well have M badges all over the place, (steering wheel, gear lever, boot, mats, sills most commonly) but the model name is just Sport.

Have I just bought a car driven by pedants that get all out of sorts if someone calls their fake M5 the wrong nomenclature?

If so, would anyone like to buy mine off me - god only knows I dont want people to think of me like that!!

Its a 2nd car for getting me to work and back in, so not my P&J at all and totally surplus to actual requirements, just a good deal came up due to the abs ECU fault and situation of previous owner and I grabbed it.

I'll just call it a fake M5 in future, then theres no misunderstanding.

Well yes it's not an M Sport but a nice car all the same, whatever you like to call it. The cooling system may need attention if any part of it is older than 5 years.

My friend moved from a reliable e39 525i to an unreliable e60 525d so let's hope so... Despite DPF and other issues I think he is happy with the move, helped by the fact that his e60 is a black Msport with cinnamon leather and does look good. I was a big fan of his 525i though, felt like it had plenty of pep with the manual box and handled wonderfully.

Have a few jobs to do, abs ecu, rocker cover gasket and vanos seals. Drives really nicely no clonks, rattles or looseness at all

My 528i had an airbag fault, turned out to be the wires that connected to the drivers seat sensor, only apparent when adjusting the seat - it was enough to temporarily break the contact and trigger a fault code. It's a very common problem caused by years of moving the seat back and forward so could be worth a check?

I'm going to take a look at that as well, seems to have pretty much all the common e39 faults, glad I didn't pay a lot for it!

You say abs ecu, have you enquired at Quarry Motors in Sheffield (they sell on www & the bay) as they do genuine, brand new BOSCH ones for around half price of bmw.

On the rocker cover gasket, I used wynns instant gasket on top of a full new seat of gaskets & found that was the only thing that worked due to the usual warping of the plastic rocker cover.
