The 35d and the 40d is the same engine with twin turbos, 313hp, and used in the 335d, 535d, 640d, 740d, X5 40d.....

The 30d is a single turbo 258hp engine and used in the 330d, 530d, 730d, X5 30d....

Nice 1, didn't realise the 40d and the 35d were the same engine, thanks.

I test drove an X5 30D and then a 40D immediately after.

I couldn't tell the difference.

40d has much more low down torque and a more linear power deliver.

Key thing is 60+bhp more.

Indeed. However, the difference when actually driving the cars was barely discernible.

335d is the same as the 330d in this respect - 2000rpm at 90mph.

I haven't tried an X5 40d, but have tried 335d/330d and 535d/530d. The 30d is still a very good engine, but the performance is quite different to the 35d in my experience.

The X5 and 7 series lend themselves to a more relaxed driving style (although I haven't tried the current model X5), and become rather ungainly when pushed through corners. So perhaps if I was looking at one of those, I may consider the 30d engine. In a smaller car which handles pretty well (I have AC Schnitzer springs) the 35d engine is impressive.
