I've got a bit of a problem here. I picked up an old Scalextric car (Porsche 935 Turbo from 1977) at a charity shop the other day for 50p, which was bloody good. Unfortunately, though, it doesn't work. It's completely unresponsive - no noise or anything - so I suppose it must be either a connection problem or motor problem. The motor is a Johnson 111 or 222.

Any ideas/advice? Thanks.

Does the motor turn when the wheels are rotated?

Check the wires are plugged into the holes and touch the braids
(assuming it has braids) also the wires are connected to the motor.
The braids are not flat on the guide, lift them up slightly so they
connect with the track.

Is the track working? try a different area in case of a flat spot.

I would suggest dismantling the car to give it a good clean, remove all the fluff from the axles etc. While the motor is out of the chassis, I would check it using a direct connection to the power taps. If it doesn't work, just replace it with a suitable substitute. If it does work, that would indicate the problem lies in the wiring in the car that takes the power from the track to the motor.

If the motor is working whilst in the car, but the wheels aren't turning, that would indicate stripped gears but again, these are easy enough to replace.

once you get the motor working i would also replace the tyres as they will be cracked and gone harder than concrete if you plan to run the car semi regularly

any chance of pictures of motor / wiring or underneath of the car would of been possible easier to help with diagnosis

Are these old Scalextric cars worth anything? - I have a load of old ones which I inherited when I was a kiddy from my uncle in the 70s still in the loft at my parents - they are mainly old style F1 cars - some may need spare pins or motors to get running though - can you get spares?

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I thought it was pretty relevant. smile

70's style cars unlikely to be worth much although a few low production run cars may be worth more than a tenner.

As to the OP, multimeter to check connectivity between the braids and the poles on the motor, if leccy is getting to the motor but it's not turning you're on a lost cause and a replacement motor should be sought.
