How should I describe a former detached bungalow which has been extended to include a "proper" first floor, and extended outwards for insurance purposes ?

- is it still a bungalow (it's not a dormer extension) ?
- is it now a detached house ?
- an abomination ?

Zoopla rather unhelpfully has it down as an end-of-terrace.

Detached house ?

That's how it's been marketed. Upstairs is 3 double beds, full bathroom etc.

Around here that would certainly be listed on rightmove 8/10 times as an x-bed chalet. They are quite common here. Some would call it a detached house though.

Detached Chalet Bunglaow as the upper floor is built into the roof.

I would say it only becomes a house when the majority of the second floor has full height external walls. The are houses opposite us that look like chalet bungalows from the front, but the sides and rear external walls are full height. They are houses not bungalows.

PS that is a dormer extension isn't it?

This is the bungalow next door, so should indicate how it would have looked originally. So, I think the extension would have been to the side & only partially into the previous bungalow roof. There is a pretty large loft space.

Hi.

The best thing to do would be describe as detached house for online quotes then call the top 3-4 providers who offer the cover you want to discuss. However there will not be huge differences in rating between the two (at least we don't).

Key thing with home insurance is don't just buy the cheapest you can; you need to check the details of the cover as here is huge variation in cover. You may decide you don't need some stuff (eg matching sets and suits) but do others ( accidental damage by pets?)

"abomination" fits the bill. smile

Is the garage to the left attached?

My daughter's house in an end of terrace, but the insurance company insisted their definition is semi-detached - at a slightly higher premium, of course.

210sqm of abomination, near excellent schools. Aesthetics have been trumped.

Yes, the garages appear to be attached. Not sure what these means from a semi or detached classification - I suspect it's still the latter.

hehe

It does look like it would fit in the 'Inanimate objects to which we ascribe anthropomorphic qualities' thread, whatever it was called.
