Independent dealers - negotiating
Discussion
May be a bit of a naive question, but I've only ever bought cars from private sellers (usually via Ebay!)
How much are independent dealers usually willing to negotiate by/what sort of profit margins do they have in used cars advertised for circa £5k?
I'm trying to find an early (2012) 'new shape' Fiat Panda.
There are a few dealer advertised for around £5k, but was hoping to pay closer to £4.5k.
I would hope most cars of this age, being just out of warranty, should have minimal faults so I can't see many 'traditional' bargaining points to be had.

Why not buy privately?
I would hazard a guess that(a) there arent many around privately
(b) private sellers are pitching at dealer prices anyway
Cheapest one on autotrader and its a dealer car.

Theres probably not a big pile of net profit in a dealer car at £5,000, but you should be able to get your £5,000 car down into the fours. How much are independent dealers usually willing to negotiate by/what sort of profit margins do they have in used cars advertised for circa £5k?

I'd go for the "I've £4,500 to spend and i want to buy today, can you do that deal?" and see what they say.
Sir. The advantage of buying from a dealer is that the law is completely on your side. If things go wrong, you have some recourse to the dealer. Therefore the dealer has to build this potential scenario, (and it's implied cost to him), into his profit margin. BUT. EVERYTHING in the world is negotiable. You are generally better off seeking out a small independent dealer purely because you can talk to the boss/owner himself. Trying to deal with "the big boys" generally means the salesman has to scurry off to consult with a higher authority, 'cos he's incapable/not allowed to use his brain and think for himself.
Buying privately is almost always the cheapest route. You can talk to the seller and if genuine won't mind you carrying out your own checks. This second route will always involve time, and it is worth spending that time DOING YOUR RESEARCH. Remember though, that buying from a private seller gives you no cover in law, WHATSOEVER. You just pay, in theory, less money.
