Was chatting to some like minded souls in our local bar cum cafe the other day about having a vinyl evening once in a while, a mid week do every month or so. I wondered if any of you guys out there in PH land have been to any in your area and what your thoughts might be about how they were arranged, you know, how the albums were chosen, where the gear came from and stuff like that. Looking around on various web sites there seems to be a few ways of doing it each one having it's own advantages and disadvantages. We want to try and keep it as laid back and as friendly as possible without having any one person dictating what gets listened to all the time.
A bunch of us used to do this. Music and Wine, someone would pick a modern (last 2 years) and Classic album and we'd nominate a sort of wine (English Sparkling was entertaining as was 'Wines from the coop' ).
We'd all listen to the music and get some wine then meet once a month to drink the wines and discuss the wine and music. Sometimes we did not even listen to the music (the Country month), spotify would be there so we'd take turns to put tracks on we liked which would lead onto to tracks other people liked.. It was really good fun and has led to many lasting friendships and our band...
We stopped doing it after a couple of years as we all sort of ran out of steam with it..
Good fun, you should give it a go. W

I've read some interesting stuff online about these sort of events, but they all seem to be very London or New York based. I was wondering myself about how to find out about more local events, or even trying to start up my own one, but have no idea where to start.
Yeah when you look around for a few ideas there doesn't seem to be much info out there, just the casual nature of the way people arrange things I suppose. We held a wine and vinyl evening with some friends a few years ago. Everyone (about 10 in all) had to bring along five 7 inch singles. It was fairly hilarious stuff. One individual really went for it and rolled up with Joe Dolce - Shaddap You Face and St Winnifred's School Choir - There's No One Quite Like Grandma. Luckily we'd consumed a lot of wine by the time these two classics were spun....
