Accidents now rising. What's going on?

Looks like crashes are rising. When ministers start pre-briefing and getting their defence in early, something's wrong.
In my opinion, it's something very, very wrong.
Too many people cleaning their number plates and forgetting to do the lights and glass or check their tyre pressures. However although ksi are rising, we are catching more drivers. In my opinion, it's something very, very wrong.

Maybe the introduction of Daytime Running Lights has something to do with it? Too many road users think putting lights on vehicles (even in perfect visibility) leads to better perception. More likely the opposite, and I recall ROSPA were opposed to the introduction of DRL's ...... But hey the ministers or Europe know better??

"We have traded safety for compliance"
True.
It's the same as in industry, where health and safety propaganda and paperwork are rife yet accident statistics barely change from year to year.True.
Handy stick for managers/governments to beat people with, though.

Does the fact that you're clearly wrong ever make you doubt your views on other issues?

It's a bit premature to comment untill the numbers are actually released. It's also rather presumptive to assume that the yet to be released numbers support the view that the blogger is espousing.
For a communications guru the strap-line on his website is odd but perhaps apt as far as his road safety musings are concerned.mmc's website said:

Is this a new record?

You don't do yourself any favours by making statements that can be shown to be factually incorrect in a 30 second Google search.

Ok, I should have specified that things have plateaued for the past few years in the company/industry in which I work. Other industries, you're right, I can't speak for. Does the fact that you're clearly wrong ever make you doubt your views on other issues?
However, no need to be rude about it.

What industry do you work in?
It came across as a fairly unsubtle dig, in all honesty. But forget it - let's keep things civil as it's quite an interesting subject for debate.
I'm in the electricity supply industry. Won't name the company as my views are definitely not their official ones...!
Our company IFR doesn't change much year to year, 2013/14 figure is back at the 2009/10 level having increased over the intervening 3 years. That's despite initiative after initiative, procedure after procedure being introduced over the 9 years I've worked there to supposedly make us safer.
Part of it is likely that we've been pretty good safety-wise for years, whereas as already mentioned here some industries are still in the dark ages and so have a lot of improving to do.
My original point, which I stand by, is that you reach a point where further attempts to force improvement are futile, and sometimes counterproductive, distracting staff with excessive paperwork and compliance issues and leading to an "eye off the ball" situation whereby a basic error leads to harm. I believe my employer is at this stage now, and there have been signs that the management are beginning to concede this, although real changes to simplify our safety management systems are yet to materialise.
I assume these will be the provisional figures for July to September 2014. It will come as no surprise to me that there was a rise. There is always a spike in road deaths among young people that time of year, and thanks to sky high insurance prices being brought under control and a 20% cut in fuel prices, there was a bumper crop of teenagers out enjoying themselves on the roads this summer compared with previous years. Unfortunately some of them will always end up in accidents.

Mind you, I think 'guru' is a new one for me.
