Removing a cherished plate
Discussion
Having not done this before I'm struggling to find clear guidance on it
I have a cherished plate on my car and the car will be traded in in a couple of months time , I would like to keep the plate so that I could potentially transfer it to another car either now or in the summer.
The car its currently on is less than 3 years old so not mot'd if that makes a difference
How do the new tax laws come into it ?

You need to apply to the DVLA in Swansea to put the private plate on retention, they will probably give you the original registration back to put on the car instead.

You must do this well in advance of selling the car, as it can take several weeks to be processed, and if you sell the car with the private plate on it, you will lose the plate.

no it wont matter.
Just fill in a V317 and send it off with the V5 and the payment and you will get a retention certificate back and they will assign you an age specific plate ie a 11 or 62 plate.
its straightforward and if you are selling it in a couple of months I would do it as soon asa poss. They say it can take 6 weeks but its likely to only take two but dont take any chances.

When I bought my car it still had the previous owner's private plate on. A few weeks later, I got confirmation that the transfer of the plate back to the previous owner was complete (I guess they'd started the process before they traded the car in to the dealer - or at least, before I bought it) and I switched on to the normal plates the dealer had given me.https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registrati...

I'm sure it will be important to follow the process properly, and I can't advise on what the process is because I wasn't doing it, but it seems that selling the car with the private plate still on doesn't have to mean losing the plate.

Not if it goes through a dealer no as the paperwork was already sent off. I assume this was prior to Oct 14 though as if you bought a car from a dealer today and the transfer was already going through you couldn't tax the new car without the V5 (which would be on its way or at the DVLA) so you would have to wait for it to come back with the new reg on before you could tax it.I'm sure it will be important to follow the process properly, and I can't advise on what the process is because I wasn't doing it, but it seems that selling the car with the private plate still on doesn't have to mean losing the plate.
Putting a plate on retention is not the same as transferring the plate and is much quicker.
Strictly, to transfer the plate you need to 'own' (or at least be the registered keeper of) both vehicles. Much easier and safer to put the plate on retention and then put it on the new car once you have it as a separate transaction - especially so if the new car is second hand, i.e. already registered.
When I put my plate on retention recently it took 7 days for the new reg doc to arrive with the new reg on.
One tip is, if you do take the new car with its existing reg, is to keep the physical plates so you can put them back on when you sell it (after you've put your personal number on retention again).
I appear to be rambling now... must be later that I thought!

As you seem to have your answer can I hijack this please to save me starting another topic.
I have a classic mini which is off the road, has been off the road for coming up to two years with a private plate on it.
I would like to put this plate, on one of my other current cars.
The mini has no valid MOT.
Is this possible? Or do I have to wait until the Mini is back on the road, with a valid MOT until I can transfer the reg across?

Ah, thanks. Yes, it was prior to October last year (but only just - it was the middle of September ). Things are maybe different these days then. This link covers it:

By inference that a pre-1960 vehicle must have a valid MOT to transfer a plate, it does suggest that a later vehicle may not have to have one. Haven't downloaded the form, but recall reading on here a suggestion that DVLA were reasonably flexible on this assuming you've owned the vehicle for a while and it's all correctly SORN'd etc

Okay thanks for the help, seems as though it will be best just to give them a call.
The plate was put on the mini by myself as it was once my grandfathers so is of great sentimental value so Iv'e got a, hopefully irrational, fear of me or the DVLA messing up and me losing it, so i'd rather have it on a car that im using, than a car that may be sat for another few years.

I thought I would update this
One of the cars required taxing before I could start the process and also was due its mot on 1/3/15 so I had to get all that done before I could send it off and then my wife who was a registered keeper went off on business so was a bit delayed
So last Monday 23/2/15 I sent all the paperwork off recorded delivery , this morning 4/3/15 I got back two new logbooks with it all sorted , didnt however get my MOT certificate back so hoping that will arrive in time
Pretty impressed with that really , no big deal if the certificate doesn't turn up as I will re-mot the car in about August so I dont need to battle the snow again
