I'm in the fortunate enough position to be able to purchase a watch for my wedding, and also because i've got a bit of a work bonus coming this year. Not banker bonus levels, but enough to do this. Anyway, slightly embarrassed justification out the way, I've been looking at these:

Breitling Transocean Unitime

or the Pilot version

Rolex Sea Dweller 4000

Rolex Sea Dweller Deep Sea

i'd be quite interested to know what people suggest that I take a look at, given the above, and maybe any thoughts on these choices. Perhaps the Deepsea is a bit on the large side!

i might add, i hated Rolexes for quite a long time. After seeing a few recently however i think I may have done a complete U-turn. Still not keen on the gold or the very showy models though, but the above seem quite robust and well engineered.

Presumably since it's for your impending wedding, then residual value is irrelevant as it'll never be sold?
Assuming so, are you still wedded (pun not intended) to a Breitling or Rolex?

a google image search of wrist shots makes it look worryingly gigantic in some of them e.g.

2 very different styles there. I'm not so keen on the fussy faces of the Breitling's Of the 2 I'd have to say the Rolex for me, whichever size suits your wrist most.

no not at all, would be interested to know alternatives! I've had a hunt around but i figured the watch forum regulars would know more than me!

Having just noticed the extra wording on the deep sea that would put me off a lot. It just looks like it's filler.

The thing is, we don't know what you want or like – of the two types presented, are you after a divers/sports watch, or a chronograph?
As it's such a special occasion, would you not want a more suitable watch to go with the attire?
Depending on budget, and/or if you'd only accept brand new, would you consider two to cover both aspects – dressy and sporty?
Would you only opt for something you can try on first?

The point of asking all these questions, is to narrow down what you can and should be looking at – no point recommending something you'll need to import before you can see what it looks like in real life, although with the right photos online you can minimise the potential for not liking it when it lands.

What size wrist have you – it might be worth going into a store near you, and try many different models and brands on, so you can then rule out certain sizes or styles, before looking further afield to see brands the majority of high street stores don't carry.

First of all, congratulations - on both counts.

I am also in the market for a wedding watch, but as mentioned in the previous post I'm looking for a dress watch, I feel that whilst a diver is suitable to wear with a suit day to day, a special occasion deserves a special watch. Dress watches are usually slimmer and simpler, than say a diver.

I think my budget will be lower than yours, butI have pretty much narrowed my search down to Nomos.

But there are plenty of other brands that do dress watches.

Does it have to be new?

For new Deepsea money, you'd get a stunning pre-owned (but mint) Audermars Piguet Royal Oak on bracelet or a Patek Calatrava.

As much as I love the Deepsea as perhaps the finest engineered watch there is, you won't even get it under the cuff of your shirt at the wedding!

If I hadn't already decided on a SD4000, I would probably be buying a Tudor Pelagos. Worth considering?

I've been drooling over the Breitling Transocean for a while now (pilot version.) That would be my choice personally but then I'm not a big Rolex fan. I quite like the Unitime one too.

Good points. Not wedded to either, they're just ideas. Maybe it's not possible to choose one watch for both things! I do fancy a divers/sports watch and I also like the idea of a dress watch. Of the hunting around I've done, I like jaeger le coultre, junghans, glashutte, IWC... But I'm aware that's all a bit non-specific. I'm going to go try some things on this Sat!

Cheers! Congrats to you too. I like minimal (although I know I started the thread off with the opposite), already own a mondaine and have seen Nomos before. V nice.

Doesn't have to be new! I've made a note to check those out although IIRC Royal Oak not for me.

I know Tudor is from same stable but they just look a bit like imitations to me unfort. They're quite expensive too, right? Not really sure what the differentiator is.
