My very first trip to LM24 in 2001 was with MrsB and after a bit of a farce with the hotel ended up staying in Chateau-du-loir some 40km south of the circuit.

I remember there being a few things going on in the square and have fond memories of sitting in a restaurant in the square watching cars.

Does anyone know if its just my rose tinted memory or are there things going on down there which would make the run down worthwhile.

You may have got a bit mixed up with your towns south of Le Mans. All the action with great cars and people is at La Chartre sue le Loir and the Famous Hotel de France. There is always a great atmosphere at the Hotel. But the good news is your staying not that far away and yes I understand there will be plenty going on. Bit early yet to be certain but its a Gulf anniversary this year and it was at the Hotel de France where the John Wyre Gulf teams were based. So there could be some really special cars about. Suggest you look at the HdeF facebook page you will soon know if its the place your thinking of.
PS. All rooms long since booked for le Mans Week, before you ask.

we pass through chateau-du-loir most years, staying a few miles south of there, once or twice they have held a impromptu car show in the square, and quite a few sports cars pass through over the weekend, nice place to stop and have a beer.

This is the place with a big square come car park and a bandstand on the opposite side of the road isn't it.
I remember our hotel being behind the bandstand.

Lovely place, but a bit of a trek back to the circuit.
Absolutely THE scariest moment in my driving career happened on my way back to the circuit from there. A story for another day perhaps.

Correct, Bandstand and Mairie on opposite side.
The square/car park and road were being re-done last year, usual French trick of building Flower beds laugh
