A C63 AMG, budget 25-30k.
I figured the c63 part out! PPP or not, facelift, years?

I'm vaguely, sort of thinking of selling my 2010 car

Haha sorry, wasn't sure if you had read the opening post.

Open minded - the best I can get for my money for 25-30k quite simply, with as many toys and as new/low miles as possible. I personally think I prefer the pre-facelift look.

I've had my Coupe nine months

Its not the best track car ( 12 laps of combe - new set of boots)
its not the best at carrying 4 people and luggage
Its not the flashiest
It has rubbish fuel consumption.
The media system was designed by a skilled torturer

Other than that, Its the best car I've ever owned and I really can never see myself parting with it. biggrin I've had better track cars (911) flashier ( F575), more practical (Audi S4 avant), worse fuel consumption ( E60 M5, and F575) and I've had better media systems.

but the C63 is my favourite of all of the above. bloody great thing.

I owned one for about a year.

17mpg. Mixed driving.

Now got a facelift C350 CDI, enough real world power and torque, plus twice the mpg smile

Just miss the noise!

Test drive one of these last year. Bloody memorable experience. The only part I disliked was handing the keys back to the salesman and then walking back to my M135i.

I hope to get one within the next twelve months or so. Until then I'll be having as much fun as I can in my GP2 (Got rid of the M135i)!

I've been through a selection of AMG's over the years. Never had a Porsche.

The car that always makes me smile the most is my trusty 2007 XKR that I still have today.

Other cars have come and go but I'd never thought of selling the XKR.

I've actually just ordered one of the Run-out XK Dynamic R's to get a minter while I can. I've still not sold the old XKR!

The AMG's are great cars and seem excellent value but personally I find there's just something special about an XKR.

Whatever you choose... You'll be getting a fabulous car so don't worry to much.

Half the fun is in the looking.

Thanks. The XKR is also very much on my radar.

Funnily enough, I've also been having these thoughts. I had a 2013 C63 which I sold a year ago, before that had an '03 XKR Conv (as well as numerous other things)

This weekend.....Friday I took out an M4, Saturday a 2012 911 997 GTS C4 with PDK and then a 2014 XKR Coupe Dynamic.

I loved my C63 but when we moved into a town I didn't like seeing it sitting on the drive being pooped on by the birds and not driven (I walk to work, have no garage). C63 was a fantastic car though and I have been thinking of a 507 coupe.

The M4 didn't do anything for me at all. Our family car is a 330d Touring and I honestly prefer it overall to the way the M4 felt and drove ( apologies to anyone who has one but its a personal preference). The noise was dreadful and I had approached it with an open mind having read comments regarding this. The ride was too busy for our rubbish roads even with the dampers in comfort. The DCT I felt was too much like a computer game with and had no "connection" with me as a driver. The interior was.......the same as my current car. They had one in the showroom with an individual dark blue with the leather dash etc which did feel like a £60k car but the driving was so disappointing and nowhere compared to a C63 on the road. I have no doubt that the M4 on track would probably be great.

The 911 was sublime. On wet roads, the confidence from the 4 wheel drive was superb and yet still allowing you to "play" with the car. It just felt like a fantastic and ballistically quick sports car. It reminded me of a much faster and more refined version of the Elise that I used to have. All of the controls felt great, the PDK was superb, the suspension was amazingly well sorted and the sounds from the sports exhaust were superb. The kiddies fitted in the back as well. Fantastic.

The Jag was very nice. amazingly quiet on the motorway, very comfortable, lovely interior. It sounded great (not much in it between the sound of the Jag and the C63 other than the Jag is quiet until mid-revs). Jag VERY fast in a straight line. It handled well and there was some fun to be had. Overall a great car and the best if doing long runs. They had an unregistered Dynamic Conv with a fantastic deal to be had as well.

For me with low mileage and wanting a fun car to be used frequently but not for long journeys and wanting the sports car feel, the 911 won hands down. No competition. If I wanted longer journeys or more space, I'm not sure which I would go for. The downsides to the Jag are its size (v big) and tiny/useless rear seats. C63 beats Jag on both of those. 911 as a sports car though I felt was in another league. Nice choices to have though and good to have a drive and make up our own minds. :-)

Test drove an approved used C63 today. 2012 and 4,000 miles on the clock. Was amazed by the sound it produced. Stupidly quick on sport plus mode in a straight line.

Drove a 5 litre XKR yesterday. Really stuck and confused. I know they are different cars. Loved both. Only need two seats.

Honestly don't know which way to turn. Loved both!!

This thread has been a great read. I've had my B7 RS4 Avant for five years now and am thinking about a change. I'd miss the poor weather grip and the character of the higher revving 4.2 V8, but the extra power and rear drive would liven things up a bit! What Big Brin wrote resonates with my own experience: when people know they know. I want a car that non-car people just think is a particularly tidy looking estate car, and to blend in a little. Have any of you moved from RS to AMG?

Was that the red 4-door at Ridgeway, Porstmouth? I have been watching that among others for some time now, what sort of condition is it in? Should be immaculate with only 4k on the clock but that's not always guaranteed based on an experience I had viewing a similar one.

Yes that's the one. Base spec with no packs attached. Had a flat battery when I went. Is pretty much like new as you would expect!

I loved my C63, it is a truly epic engine. I averaged around 17 mpg over the year and I rarely have to sit in traffic and I live in a rural area. I was getting 3 to 4000 miles out of a set of rear tyres and maybe 6 - 8000 miles out of the fronts. Mine was a PP+ car and it was blindingly fast and the sound was obviously brilliant. You'll search out tunnels almost as much as you'll search for a petrol station.

This brings me on to one of the main issues. Bad fuel economy, plus a small petrol tank gives a terrible range and I was visiting the local shell garage far too often. It was not the cost as much as the annoying frequency of the visits.

My other gripe was the dealerships, at Porsche they will try to get a similar or better car whereas Mercedes would just give you the same vehicle they'd give to the guy who pulled up in his A class.

As for servicing, the C63 will cost about £500 - £750 to service + any required extras per year. My Porsche servicing costs are similar but it only needs to be done every 2 years. And of course being lighter it has fuel economy as would a 911 and the tyres will last longer, it will definitely handle better than the C63 but it is not all about that, is it?

If you want a rip snorting dragster that will light your hair (and wallet) on fire, there are few cars as good as a C63. If you want a finely honed sports car that was designed to be a sports car, then the choice is of course the Porsche.

My Cayman is a lot slower that my C63 but I do not regret the change. The Porsche is a more special place to be but I would own another C63 in a heartbeat. Sorry to be not really helpful at all but there you are. Cars like these are not really bought with the head.

In exactly the same position with exactly the same budget.

I've had a 997 C2S in the past and it is without doubt the best car I've ever owned. With The PSE and the sports chrono it was just like a bigger faster version of previous Elise's I've owned (well, nearly, there's no replacement for real lightweight...) I'd get one again but the addition of small children since have rained on that particular parade!

I'm currently in a 335d MSport with a DMS map which is mightily fast in gear. I only want one car these days and with family it needs to be at least a saloon.

I know this is the Merc forum but I need some objective feedback from past C63 owners. The one thing you can't do with a 335d is chuck it about - can you really hussle a C63? Also, does it really need a diff and is the updated suspension that comes with the PPP just too hard for everyday driving?

Or should I just get back into an M3....!

@james22

Well the C63 guys are (obviously) going to say C63!

As an ex M3 and C63 owner I would say M3 over C63 if you are coming directly from a BMW. The Mercedes poor quality fit and design might annoy an ex-BMW guy, however not everybody cares about trim rattles and wonky UI. The engine in the C63 is stronger, (in my option) and feels better low down. But the gear box in the BMW is better.....

Tough call! Good luck.

Tom

(Just edited to note that the OP went with a 997).......

I'm looking at used C63's, (and M4) probably two or three years old, are there any must haves? Are there any big difference in model years? I quite like the coupe even though he saloon would be more practical, are the interiors the same/ seats etc. I really fancied a new one but I'm sick of throwing away money on new cars, my logic is if I like it I may buy the new model in 18months time when there are some decent deals around or decent used examples. MB dealers are doing two year warranties on used AMG's at the moment which is nice to have and swaying me towards used.
