Jag XK/R - A good buy?

Hello all,
I am trying to decide on my next car purchase. Budget is up to £30,000.
I am currently between an XKR, Mercedes C63 and Porsche.
Could any XK/R owners advise on living with one day to day. Real life costs (inc MPG which i'm guessing will be around 18?) and if you have any experience of the other two and how it compares? I assume the 5 litre engine is the one to aim for over the 4.2 if budget allows? is the XKR notably quicker in day to day use than the XK?
I appreciate in the Jaguar section views may be slightly biased, but just trying to do my research fully as never been able to spend anywhere close to this on a car before.

Not sure if this helps but I have just sold my 997 C4s in order to buy an F type R . The 997 I had for 5 years a great car , around town the mpg was around 21 mpg.
I would say the back seats would be more useable than the Xk from memory, they are both very fine cars so you gave a dilemma!!

Mine does about 20MPG, it will depend heavily on what you're doing behind the wheel. If I got it out of the garage and drove the mile and half to town it would be lucky to break 10, likewise if you plant your right foot to the floor it's going to out drink a fish. If you're able to cruise at 50plus for any distance the mileage will improve markedly, I guess the gearbox isn't going into top below 40ish as the mileage is worse at those sorts of speed.
I'm sure an XK is fast enough in 99+% of cases, the 5L XKR is hugely quick though. It isn't the foot to the floor thing that is really impressive, you kind of know that there's 500BHP there, its the 25% throttle tickle where there's room to let it go that is really something, your never need to feel you're trying. If you go for it you just run out of road or speed that can sensibly used on a public highway. Slip roads where normal quick cars are at 85ish merging speed as you reach the top of the ramp you'll find you've had to back off a third of the way up unless you want to be doing arrest me now sorts of speeds.

I'm on my third XKR, 18mpg is what I get from mostly A and B road driving, 22mpg on the motorway.
£30k would get you a good Jaguar approved XKR 5.0 - the warranty is fantastic - albeit very expensive if you are then eligible for renewal (age/mileage) after the initial 12months. I think some dealers were offering a 24 month warranty recently?
Lovely car, feels special, massive spec as standard, crazy powerful engine, handles better than some rival GTs but it's still a GT - the 911 will handle much better!

As above, I've had both engines in the XF and they're both great. Take them out for a spin. I went for another Jaguar as consumables and servicing seem a lot cheaper than the Germans.
I would recommend an extended warranty when you buy too, I was able to get a 2 year Inchcape warranty as well as one year Jaguar and my local dealer is Inchcape (but bought from Leeds).

Mines the convertible and without the wind deflector I've had both the kids back for shorter runs, the youngest is about 5'10" and the elder is 6'2". The younger one and his friends don't seem to mine going in the back too much for local runs even with the top up. But it makes a better 3 seater than 4 I'll grant. The shape of the rear seat doesn't let you do the normal 2+2 trick of sitting cross ways in the back with your bum on one seat and your seat in the other foot well. Of course part of the willingness to go in the back is because its an XKR, they've been known to whinge in the back of my XJ6 and refuse to go in the back of my XK150 these days.Davel said:

Yeah I can imagine. I haven't tried the eldest in the back with the roof up while actually driving. He got in the back when we were looking in the show room, I think that was because he wanted me to have the car rather than buy another classic. His head touches the roof in the back of my X300, but he loves that car nearly as much as I do, so doesn't complain. A friend used to have an early 911 turbo (that would have been a 930) and her kids used to complain constantly once they reached teenage, "Mum when are you going to get a proper car" "Shut up or walk". The car feels more effortless than a Porsche, and the Porsche feels more hard edged, but I'm not actually sure about handling better, just a very different style. The Porsche rear seats are definately more usable. The ones in the XK, or Aston DB9, are very short trip only.
Fuel consumption in the XKR is pretty disastrous, 18-22 as you say, but it a superb car which you will love. It cossets you and the effortless performance is always there and just makes you feel superior to anything else on the road - Jags are good at that. The XKR is crazy fast, but the XK is no slouch - a 5.0 V8 gives imho the best all round experience but the XKR has that cachet. The real difference is if you floor it in the XK it is fast and sounds great, do the same in the R and you are in warp factor, sometimes alarmingly so.
Get a drive in one and see what you think.
