I,m having a little shuffle around this winter and have decided that my race lorry is going to be put up for sale in the next week or so, possibly to upgrade. Has any one on here sold a race transporter to give me some advice and any suggestions as to where to advertise it for best results. Any one used Piston heads motorsport section or else where for results.

Forgot it is a 7.5 ton, grandfather rights licence

I use RAC commercial cover £25 one off payment to register then they organise recovery and repair they list the labour charges up front when you join should you need their services. I have been a member with them for 5 years but not needed to call . They cover all UK and Europe .Andy Holden put me onto them. I can e mail some more details if you need but google is your friend all my paperwork is in lorry cab a few miles away.

Hi Darren

If you still not sure I was at lorry yesterday and dug out paper work. My policy is a "Pay on Use" solution and it can be arranged by phoning 0800 092 4156 which is RAC commercial customer services.

I had a bad experience with commercial RAC when I had a failed alternator at Oulton. Had to teach the RAC man how to diagnose it, and then he didn't have a spare and couldn't get one. Still cost me £200 + notes though.

I now have an account with Iveco, which gives me access to their call out. And they do carry spares that fit.

Fancy you recommending them wink On the other side of the coin a mate in PCGB used them a few times now no problems you pay and make your choices.

I have been waiting days now for advert to go live on piston heads still not up yet. Here is another link in the meantime if you want to know about it.

I had RAC as a safety net for years and didn't need to use them. With no annual subscription it is a great option and that was the basis of my recommendation.

The only time I did need them (last season) they sent a contractor who knew diddly squat. Put a jump battery on to get the tail lift up and the truck started - but it would barely run with lights on. He was adamant it was a big fuse, which he spent over an hour searching for unsuccessfully - including removing the batteries. Had to suggest he put a meter across the alt and even then he thought 12v output was ok (on a 24v system).

By the time the diagnosis was made it was very, very late on a Saturday night and no chance of doing anything. Unfortunately with RAC Commercial you take pot luck with the quality of the contractor they send - I was very unlucky. I doubt I'd get anyone that bad ever again.

The Iveco fella had a new alt fitted and me on my way in 30 mins - but without an account at the time getting him there was something of a challenge - especially on a Sunday. Lesson learned and I now have an account with Iveco which gives me access to their call out.

What was most annoying was the alt was damaged by welding work done on the chassis by the people who did the transporter conversion. ALt working fine when dropped off for some tail lift upgrades - lots of welding done and alt warning light on when I collected it. Which I ignored!
