Thinking of driving to northern Italy later this year. Which sat nav offers best all round performance please? Budget not primary issue, performance/ accuracy/ clarity is. Cheers.

Last time I was there, my Garmin worked flawlessly, once the Italian maps were loaded, - including avoiding the autostrada (didn't fancy negotiating the tolls in a RHD car when I was solo).

These days, I'd probably risk using Navfree on my phone.

I drive in Europe often and have a garmin 5" with 'free lifetime European maps and traffic'. Don't have any crits and setting the thing to shortest route uses the motorways. In addition they come with points of interest including hotels and gas stations which has saved me from a long cold walk on three occasions. Maps are updated twice a year and it also has good Bluetooth for the phone.

The traffic sensing can also re route the trip around jams which also helped me around Antwerp a couple of times.

There is also a large speedo and trip screen, useful to set to kph, distance to go, and so on.

I have used google maps and others on a smartphone, but the Garmin is easier to use on the move (for me). It is wired in with the wires hidden or taped down with double sided Velcro squares. Thin traffic antenna wire hides at the front of the windscreen.
