so.... time for my cars first ever MOT! Thankfully it passed! However I had to adjust the steering rack there and then as there was too much free play. I was given a verbal advisory on the steering knuckle that sits just before the rack. Not enough to fail but more than he would expect and to be fair, he is right. So what's the highest quality steering knuckle to use? Is it based on a particular car?
I didn't install it as so I assume it was a factory supplied item but id be supplied if it started to wear with so little use.
Cheers.
Mark.

How many miles?

I would give the Factory a call tomorrow as they will know what was supplied by them to that chassis number.

It is possible to get some knuckles that are enclosed but they are horrendously expensive so just get a new set from the Factory.

My Factory supplied joints have done 8000 miles and no issues.

hate to say it, but 1500 miles with too much play would point me to a mistake on install. I would check that there are still threads left beyond where the retaining nut sets now, possibly you ran out of thread before the taper was all the way home, or stopped short of pulling the ball joint all the way into the hole. Just some thoughts, Lee

Think that is the wrong joint. I believe the OP is talking about the universal joint where the steering shaft joins the rack pinion.

Yep, the steering rack I adjusted at the MOT station to eliminate that and the remaining play seems to be within the join itself. Factory one is 45 delivered, Im just looking at my options before I pull the trigger on a new one to ensure its not a symptom of an underlying root cause. Im trying to find out if the one installed is indeed a factory item. I'm the 're-builder' rather than the original builder smile. all part of getting to know the car and there isnt much left on it for me to closely inspect smile
