Hello,

My 2011 Mazda 5 Diesel Sport needs a new rear offside damper, as the original has sprung a leak (The nearside one was replaced a year ago my a Mazda main dealer under warranty). Now the car is no longer under warranty I certainly don't want to pay a main dealer the £200 asking price when it's a simple enough job to do myself.

Can anyone recommend a reputable place where I can get a replacement? Mazda are quoting £112.85 +VAT which is mental, particularly when it's well known that the original items are pretty crap! I have looked at several generic on-line suppliers all of which quote around £50-60 for after market replacements, but they offer little in the way of technical information about the parts they are suggesting. It seems almost too good to be true that these parts will just drop on like an OEM part.

I am slightly nervous about ordering from one of these places because the last thing I want is to get a replacement that either fits and is the wrong spec, or, doesn't fit properly!

Any advice would be gratefully received :-)

Thanks,

Luke

Car manufacturers buy in their parts from suppliers.
As an example, a Peugeot clutch from a franchised dealer will come in a box with Peugeot & the lion all over it. The clutch inside the box will have VALEO stamped/painted on it. Valeo are the oe supplier to peugeot. If I buy a clutch from my usual motor factor for the same car it will come in a box with Valeo printed on it & the clutch will have Valeo on it.
That said, when you buy a part from a franchised dealer you will get a part that should both fit and be fit for purpose and be the latest version of it.
Whilst you may get the same thing elsewhere, there are a lot of cheapie pattern parts out there some of which are appalling.
If a part is critical and/or is a PITA to fit - such as a crankshaft seal - then I source from a dealer. I only get headgaskets from the dealer - learnt that the hard way a long time ago!

Hi Luke,

I replaced the rear shocks on my wife's 1.8 petrol Mazda5 last year. I got them from Euro Car Parts. I just typed in the reg plate and it suggested the ones that would fit. I went for the Sachs ones and they fitted fine. It was an easy job to DIY.

Good luck!

Thanks! I saw the same parts on the Euro Car Parts site and have ordered the Sachs unit.

Best wishes,

Luke
