Makes a change having a thread about holidays in the UK and I can now confess we will be spending it in a caravan! AND towing it.

Still there?

hello!

Would appreciate suggestions for somewhere to go.

Must be:

1. Coastal
2. Near a decent sized town for a little shopping etc..
3. 5 hours max from Lincolnshire (Sleaford)
4. NOT Norfolk

Personal experience of somewhere would be great.

Thought about Dorset but never been before so no idea where decent places to stay.

Thanks

We had a great time last summer at Slapton Sands, Devon.

Ticks all of your boxes apart from time - it might take 6 hours (depending on how many stops you make and how fast you tow, I guess!).

Cracking location, lovely views, close to the beach, lovely campsite, close to Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe which are all really lovely.

We'd definitely go back.

I'm a bit biased as I live here, but I'd recommend North Devon (although it may be a bit more than four hours drive with a 'van on the back)

We've got massive sandy surf beaches on the west coast (Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe), or small pebbly bays on the North Coast with loads of rockpools to fish, rocks to climb and explore.

There are loads of caravan parks around - Stowford Farm Meadows is a big one with good facilities (used to work there years ago too)

Otherwise, I used to like a place in Dorset called Burton Bradstock.

I live in the New Forest ( Ringwood) on the boundary of Dorset. To be honest anywhere along the coast from Beaulieu - Weymouth puts you in reach of plenty to do. Beaches most usable East of Poole but there are some very nice coves west of there. Depends what you want from Shopping

Bournemouth
Castlepoint
Southampton - West Quay is a good shopping centre according to my missus

Stuff to do

Beaulieu Motor Museum
Poultons Park ( East )
Adventure Wonderland
Tank Museum ( West )
Swanage Steam Railway
Corfe Castle
Moors Valley is a fun country park for the kids and on bikes
New forest has plenty to offer

End of August is the Bournemouth Air festival

Maybe 6 hours is ok for the right place.
Thanks for the suggestion. Stayed in Salcombe years ago pre kids and it was lovely.
Just the annoying teens there for the summer in the £1/2m holiday home that spoilt it a little.

North Wales? Spent a fair amount of time in Conwy and Llandudno recently with the kids.

Lots to do, some lovely beaches and kids pools along the A55. Couple of decent caravan sites near Penmaenmawr.

Used to spend my summers on the Llyn Peninsula as a kid and loved it.

My extended family now go to mid wales each year which I attend every few years.

So north wales is a possibility but I would either try Anglesy or the Llyn.
Beaches there are fantastic.

North Devon would be my shout too - I love it down there.

North Devon is a definite contender.

Had our honeymmon in Boscastle which was lovely and visited Mortohoe, Woolacombe and Croyde.

I will search for sites

Croyde is my favourite place, but if you're going at peak season getting the can be a pain as Braunton can be a bit of a bottleneck. Woolacombe might be a better bet.

Lincolnshire coast is ok if you want beaches. Also as you are in Sleaford it means you are only an hour or so away.

We spent a week in St Davids in west wales for those considerations, except for the drive. Best holiday I've had with the kids so far. A week of sunshine helped.

1) Beaches are best in UK. Forget Cornwall, these are superb.
2) St Davids is lovely.
3) A great fish restaurant in Fishguard.
4) Megaphobia in Oakwood.
5) Castle Carreg.
6) Waterfall country in Ystrad Ffelltre.
7) Sea safari on a speed boat from St Davids.

Break the journey up with a stop in Bristol to see the SS Great Britain.

We spend lots of weekends around Sutton on Sea, Sandilands etc.. staying on the Caravan Club site so want to go a little further.
Great open beaches but fancy the small coves and rock pools that you get on the welsh and south west coast.

Thanks also for Purbecks suggestion and Pembrokshire which is a big drive but may be worth it. Have visited the Gower a few times and really liked it. I will investigate further.

Coves, caves and beaches head up the coast past the Humber, Scarborough, Flamborough, Bempton, Redcar, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, Sandsend etc the coast up there can be stunning.
