I think this may be my first thread on PH (back of the net)! Anyway, when cold and especially when changing into first, it takes a bit of effort to get into gear. The change is fine when the car is warm. Is this anything to worry about?

I had the gearbox oil changed during it's last service which was in June, this made the gearchange a bit better overall but didn't make a difference to the problem above. The car doesn't do that many miles, probably about 5k a year, 55k total. It's a 2006 car.

The problem is at it's worst when, for example, coming up to a set of lights and they change just as I'm about to stop. Changing into first when the car is slowly moving is an effort. Synchro problem?

Dont ask me to explain it but nearly all Italian gearboxes are "stiff" when cold. My Lancia doesnt engage 2nd or 5th ,Ferraris have problems with 2nd.Try double de-clutching,and you could try changing the oil to a fully synthetic, this can help.

Thanks for the advice. When I got it serviced the gearbox oil wasn't cheap, so I would assume that it was fully synth. But as that quote from Lock Stock says, I won't assume anything. I'll try giving my left leg a bit of an extra workout and see if that helps!

I had a Bravo, mine had this issue, the gear change cables had seized, they were replaced under warranty, Fiatforum seems to suggest a blast of WD40 does the trick.

I had the same sort of issue.

Was an absolute sod to get into first sometimes, then others would go in sweet as a nut.

Went in for a new clutch as it needed one, turns out the DMF was shagged, replaced that, the clutch and Concentric Slave Cylinder and it was a revelation, that was 4 months ago and it's still great now.

I had this on my Abarth 500. Try selecting gear when the engine is switched off, just have a play about. That may help. Another trick is to select second first, then select first (hope that makes sense).
