Hi guys,

I got snapped by a speed camera van on Snake Pass the other day.

When I spotted it the only thing I could think of was 'bang to rights' - it was on a long straight coming downhill and I was speeding, simple as that. It is a blanket 50mph zone all along Snake Pass but unfortunately I didn't pay that much heed on the long straight. I thought I was doing about 75mph when it snapped me.

The summons that has arrived today however says I was doing 81mph and is a notice of intending prosecution issuing a court summons.

I was expecting a ticket and would not have contested it as I was in the wrong, but now wonder if I should maybe take some legal advice as this looks serious.

I have a clean license and rely on being able to drive in order to operate my business.

Can anyone give me any advice please?

PM me and I'll give you the details of somebody who got a friend of mine off relatively lightly for the same speed differential (and at a very, very reasonable price)

Go to Court Suited and Booted,

Admit the offence and be remorseful,

Explain you need your licence for your living.

When they ask you why you were doing81 in a 50, just tell them the POS wouldn't go any faster. That should get you off.

Going suited and booted will make fk all difference and is way OTT for a simple speeding offence. Just admit guilt, no need to hang your head in shame or turn on the water works or other theatricals, this sort of bullst will not act to go in your favour as its so see through and would imagine magistrates get very tired of seeing it..

Is it wrong to hope the op gets a ban?

No but hopefully, whatever the outcome, the OP won't be in the same position again after this is concluded.

He won't get a ban for that on a clean license, maybe 6 points if they're in a grumpy mood. I do think turning up smart can't do you any harm, if they do have discretion they'll be likely to use it. Grovelling however isn't a good idea, clean honest admission is what they like.

Have you ever driven over snake pass ?

your not wrong there ,there are only two speed limits I never break 20 and 30

the difference is if I was to get caught going 31 mph over the posted speed limit I would not post on here asking how to minimise the punishment I would be likely to get as a result

Interesting, as the local guideline is a 14 day ban and the national guideline is:

I learned to drive on roads like the SP in the early70s. Agree sad that so many great roads have such a low limit. I can see they want to catch the cars and bikes doing 70+, but a 50 limit isn't the way to do this.

Just out of interest, where was the van parked up? Asking for a friend who uses that road quite a lot and thinks the 50 limit is a joke. :-)

Seems to work OK for the people who appear on the various Traffic Cops TV programmes.
